Abstract
Membaca adalah salah satu keterampilan yang paling penting dalam bahasa Inggris. Dalam membaca, pembaca harus memiliki strategi untuk memahami apa yang mereka baca. Namun, setiap orang memiliki karakteristik yang berbeda dan gaya kognitif bisa menjadi salah satu indikatornya. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui strategi membaca siswa berdasarkan gaya kognitif yang berbeda. Penelitian ini memiliki dua teori utama yakni strategi membaca dan gaya kognitif. Pertama, strategi strategi membaca yang diusulkan oleh Mokhtari dan Sheorey (2002) yang terbagi dalam tiga kategori yaitu strategi membaca global, pemecahan masalah dan dukungan. Kedua, gagasan gaya kognitif yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini diusulkan oleh Wyss (2002) yang terbagi menjadi Field Independent (FI) dan Field Dependent (FD). Penelitian ini menggunakan deskriptif kuantitatif sebagai desain penelitian dan survei sebagai strategi pengumpulan data. Survei digunakan dalam kaitannya dengan generalisasi hasil penelitian. Subjek penelitian ini adalah 106 siswa Program Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris di Universitas Brawijaya. Penelitian ini menggunakan dua instrumen yaitu Survey Strategi Membaca (SORS) oleh Mokhtari (2002) dan ceklis FI / FD oleh Wyss (2002). Penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa siswa menerapkan tiga strategi dengan tingkat frekuensi tinggi pada gaya kognitif yang berbeda. Skor rata-rata tertinggi dari Field Independent adalah dalam strategi pemecahan masalah sedangkan siswa Field Dependent memiliki skor rata-rata tertinggi pada penggunaan strategi membaca pendukung. Dari pembahasannya, strategi membaca siswa memiliki ciri-ciri yang terlihat cocok dengan teknik pembelajaran K-W-L.
English Abstract
Reading is one of the most important skills in English language learning. In reading, the readers should have strategies to understand what they read. However, each person has different characteristics and cognitive style can be the characteristic indicators. This study is aimed at finding out the students’ reading strategies based on their different cognitive styles. This study employs two main theories, namely reading strategies and cognitive styles. Firstly, the reading strategies idea proposed by Mokhtari and sheorey (2002) which was divided into three categories namely global, problem-solving and support reading strategies. Secondly, the cognitive styles idea that used in this study is proposed by Wyss (2002) which are divided into field Independent (FI) and field dependent (FD). This study applies descriptive quantitative as the research design and survey as strategy of inquiry. The survey is used in relation to generalize the result of a research. The subject of this study is 106 students of English Language Education Program at Universitas Brawijaya. The study uses two instruments namely Survey of reading strategies (SORS) by Mokhtari (2002) and FI/FD checklist by Wyss (2002). Present study has revealed that the students perceived the three strategies with high frequency level on different cognitive styles. The highest mean score from Field Independent is in problem solving strategies; however, field dependent students get the highest mean score in support reading strategies. From the discussion, the students’ reading strategies seemed to have a compatible chase for using K-W-L teaching technique.
