Abstract
Penggunaan peranti ortodonti lepasan dapat meningkatkan jumlah bakteri Streptococcus mutans (MS) dalam saliva dan menciptakan faktor retensi baru untuk pembentukan plak. Streptococcus mutans merupakan bakteri yang sering ditemukan pada baseplate peranti ortodonti lepasan. Pencegahan infeksi Streptococcus mutans dapat dilakukan menggunakan larutan disinfektan. Selain menggunakan disinfektan paten (seperti sodium hipoklorit dan chlorhexidine), beberapa bahan alam juga dapat digunakan sebagai alternatif, seperti daun sirih hijau (Piper betle L). Daun sirih hijau mengandung senyawa antibakteri seperti tanin, saponin dan flavonoid. Penelitian ini bertujuan mengetahui efektivitas dekok daun sirih hijau (Piper betle L.) sebagai pembersih basis akrilik pada peranti ortodonti lepasan terhadap jumlah bakteri Streptococcus mutans. Penelitian ini menggunakan model posttest only control group design pada lempeng akrilik heat cured berukuran 10x10mm yang telah dikontaminasi S.mutans. Lempeng akrilik direndam selama 30 menit pada setiap perlakuan yaitu dekok sirih hijau dengan konsentrasi 20%, 40%, 60%, 80%, 100%, NaOCl 0,05% sebagai kontrol pembanding dan akuades sebagai kontrol positif. Jumlah bakteri dihitung menggunakan spektrofotometer. Analisis data menggunakan uji Oneway Anova dan dilanjutkan dengan uji Post Hoc Tukey HSD. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan terdapat perbedaan bermakna jumlah bakteri Streptococcus mutans antara perendaman lempeng akrilik heat cured dalam dekok daun sirih hijau dengan berbagai konsentrasi. Kesimpulan penelitian adalah dekok daun sirih hijau (Piper betle L .) efektif sebagai pembersih basis akrilik pada ortodonti lepasan dengan menurunkan jumlah bakteri Streptococcus mutans.
English Abstract
Orthodontic appliance can increase the number of Streptococcus mutans in saliva and creates new retentive factor for the plaque. Streptococcus mutans is commonly found on acrylic baseplates of removable orthodontic appliances. The prevention of Streptococcus mutans infection is generally done by immersion the removable orthodontic in desinfectant solution. Aside of using patent disinfectants (such as sodium hypochlorite and chlorhexidine), some natural substance may become the alternative, for example is betel leaf. Betel leaf contains antibacterial compounds such as tannins, saponin and flavonoids. The aim of this study was to determine the effectiveness of betel leaf decoction as a cleanser for baseplate of removable orthodontic appliance againts the number of Streptococcus mutans bacteria. The methods used in this research was post test only control group design to examine acrylic heat cured plates 10x10mm samples which had been contamined with Streptococcus mutans. Acrylic plates had been immersed until 30 minutes for each group of samples in betel leaf decoction with concentration 20%, 40%, 60%, 80%, 100%, comparative control group with NaOCl 0,05% and aquadest for control positive. Number of bacteria was calculated using spectrophotometer. The obtained data was analyzed with Oneway Anova test and Post Hoc Tukey test. The result showed significant differences of the number of S. mutans between immersion in betel leaf decoction in some concentrations. The conclusion of this study is that betel leaf decoction is effective as a cleanser for baseplate of removable orthodontic appliance by decreasing the number of Streptococcus mutans.
