Naung, ShaneHtet (2015) The Potential Effect of Vinegar as a Repellent towards Fire Ants (Solenopsis sp.). Sarjana thesis, Universitas Brawijaya.
Abstract
English Abstract
Fire Ants (Solenopsis sp.) can be hazardous to outdoor workers. They can cause serious health problems such as life-threatening allergic reactions. Because of the negative impacts of fire ants, people attempt to control them by various techniques such as mound treatments and using insecticides. But there are no methods that permanently control or eliminate them. Based on the fact that vinegar is a potent repellent, a research was done to test its repellent effect on fire ants. This research was an experimental laboratory research using three different concentrations of vinegar (50%, 60 %, 70%) to repel fire ants and the number of repelled fire ants in 1st hour, 2nd hour, 3rd hour, 4th hour, 5th hour, 6th hour and 24th hour were observed. The obtained data was analyzed by using One Way ANOVA test. According to the analysis, different concentrations of Vinegar (acetic acid) give different repellent effects in every hour. Based on this test, the optimum dose of acetic acid to be used as a repellent on fire ants is 70% and the most effective in the first three hours. From this research, we can conclude that vinegar does have potential repellent effect on fire ants (Solenopsis sp.)
