Abstract
Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui hubungan antara kosakata siswa dengan kemampuan membaca pada siswa kelas delapan di MTs Negeri Malang 1 dan dampaknya terhadap Englih Language Teaching (ELT). Jumlah populasi dari penelitian ini yaitu siswa kelas delapan di MTs Negeri Malang 1 pada tahun akademik 2016/2017 yang berjumlah 318. Sementara itu, sample yang diambil yaitu siswa kelas VIII D yang terdiri dari 32 siswa. Pemilihan sampel berdasarkan saran dari guru Bahasa Inggris. Sampel tersebut dipilih karena kelas VIII D adalah kelas regular unggulan di angkatan kelas delapan. Peneliti menggunakan metode kuantitatif dengan desain korelasi.Untuk mendapatkan data, peneliti menggunakan tes sebagai instrumen. Tes dibuat dalam bentuk pilihan ganda yang terdiri dari 50 pertanyaan. Pertanyaan tersebut digai menjadi dua, 25 pertanyaan untuk tes kosakata dan 25 pertanyaan untuk tes membaca. Pertanyaan-pertanyaan tersebut diambil dari soal Ujian Nasional (UN) dan buku siswa. Dalam menganalisa data, peneliti menggunakan Pearson Product Moment untuk mendapatkan hasil korelasi. Penemuan dalam penelitian menunjukkan bahwa nilai ro adalah 0.619 dan nilai to adalah 4.31. Kemudian, dengan menggunakan df 30, yang dibandingkan dengan r table dan t table pada signifikansi 1% hasilnya yaitu 0.449 dan 2.45. hal tersebut menunjukkan bahwa ro lebih tinggi dari r table (0.619 > 0.449) dan to lebih tinggi dari t table (4.31 > 2.45). hal tersebut berarti bahwa korelasi antara kosakata dengan kemampuan membaca adalah positif dan kuat. Sementara itu, hipotesa alternative (Ha) diterima dan hipotesa nol (Ho) ditolak. Dampak dari korelasi antara kosakata dan membaca yaitu jika siswa tersebut memiliki kemampuan yang baik dalam kosakata dan membaca, akan memudahkan siswa dalam membaca materi pembelajaran.
English Abstract
The purpose of this study is to find out the correlation between students’ vocabulary mastery and their reading comprehension at the eighth graders of MTsN Malang 1 and its impact towards English Language Teaching (ELT). The population of this study were the students of the eighth class of MTsN Malang 1 in academic year 2016/2017 which consisted of 318 students. Meanwhile, the sample were 32 students in the VIII D class. The sample was taken by the suggestion from the English teacher and it is considered as the most excellent class among the other class. The researcher used quantitative method with correlational design. To collect the data, the researcher used test as the instrument. The test was in the form of multiple choice which consisted of 50 questions. The questions were divided into two, 25 questions for vocabulary mastery and 25 questions for reading comprehension. The questions were taken from National Examination (UN) and students’ textbook by matching them with the syllabus. In analyzing the data, the researcher used Pearson Product Moment to find out the value of correlation. The finding showed that the value of correlation coefficient (ro) was 0.619 and t value (to) was 4.31. then by df 30, it was compared with r table and t table at the significance 1% in which the result was 0.449 and 2.45. It proved that ro was higher than r table ( 0.619 > 0.449) and to was higher than t table (4.31 > 2.45). It means that the correlation between vocabulary mastery and reading comprehension was positive and strong. Meanwhile, the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted and the null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected. The effect of the correlation is, if the students get a good score in vocabulary mastery, they will get a good score in reading comprehension also and vice versa, meaning that vocabulary mastery is affect the students’ ability in comprehending a text.
