Abstract

Beberapa siswa kelas dua di SMAN 5 Malang masih memiliki kendala dalam berbicara bahasa Inggris. Siswa malu dan tidak percaya diri untuk berbicara bahasa Inggris di kelas dengan guru atau temannya. Kemudian, guru memberikan kegiatan bermain peran sebagai aktivitas berbicara dua kali dalam sebulan agar siswa percaya diri berbicara dalam bahasa Inggris. Oleh karena itu, penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui persepsi siswa terhadap bermain peran sebagai aktivitas berbicara. Dengan menggunakan descriptive survey, ada 62 siswa kelas dua dan satu guru bahasa Inggris SMAN 5 Malang sebagai subyek pada penelitian ini. Penyebaran angket dan wawancara dilakukan untuk mengumpulkan data. Data dari angket dianalisa secara kuantitatif untuk mengetahui persepsi siswa dari persentase data. Kemudian, data tersebut dianalisa dengan pemahaman dari data wawancara yang bertujuan untuk mendapatkan penjelasan lebih dalam tentang persepsi siswa. 92% siswa memiliki positif persepsi terhadap bermain peran. Hal tersebut dapat disimpulkan dari hasil data tujuh indikator. Sedangkan 8% siswa memiliki negatif persepsi terhadap bermain peran karena guru tidak melakukan beberapa step pada bermain peran dengan baik. Saran berdasarkan penemuan, guru sebaiknya menggunakan teknik mengajar yang cocok untuk mendukung siswa dalam mempelajari apa yang harus mereka kuasai. Penelitian ini juga dapat digunakan sebagai referensi untuk penelitian selanjutnya tentang aktivitas berbicara. Para peneliti disarankan untuk melakukan penelitian yang sama tentang persepsi siswa terhadap bermain peran sebagai aktivitas berbicara. Namun, berbeda pada mata pelajaran bahasa, tempat dan aspek lainnya untuk mendapatkan empiris data tentang persepsi siswa terhadap bermain peran.

English Abstract

Some of the second year students in SMAN 5 Malang still have a challenge in speaking for English subject. The students are shy and unconfident to speak in English in the classroom with their teacher or friends. Then, the teacher gives role play as speaking activity twice in a month in order to make students confident to speak in English. Therefore, this study aims to find out the students’ perception on role play as speaking activity. Using descriptive survey, the subjects of this study were 62 second graders and one English teacher from SMAN 5 Malang. To collect the data, questionnaire and interview were used. The data from the questionnaire were analyzed quantitatively to know the tendency of the students’ perception reflected from the percentage. Further, it is elaborated comprehensively with interview data which aims to get deep explanations about the students’ perception. 92% of the students had positive perception toward role play as speaking activity. It was indicated from the result of the seven indicators. It means that role play is suitable to be used as speaking activity. Meanwhile, 8% of the students had negative perception because the teacher did not do some steps in role play well. Based on the findings, suggestions are given to the teacher that he/she should use a proper teaching technique to support the students on what they have to master. This study also can be used as reference for further researchers who will conduct research about speaking activity. They are suggested to conduct similar research in finding out students’ perception on role play as speaking activity in different language subjects, places and other aspects to provide empirical data about students’ perception toward role play.
