Abstract
Perpustakaan perguruan tinggi merupakan institusi pengelola karya cetak, rekam dan tulis yang ada di lingkungan perguruan tinggi. Tujuan utama dari perpustakaan perguruan tinggi adalah memenuhi kebutuhan informasi untuk menunjang tri dharma perguruan tinggi. Munculnya kebutuhan informasi tersebut menndorong pengguna untuk menelusur informasi tersebut sehingga timbullah perilaku pengguna dalam menelusur informasi. Perilaku pengguna dalam menelusur informasi perlu dikaji lebih dalam terutama di Pusat Perpustakaan UIN Maulana Malik Ibrahim dengan megenalisis perilaku tersebut pustakawan dapat mengetahui apa yang dibutuhkan pengguna. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui perilaku pengguna dalam menelusur informasi dan faktor yang melatarbelakangi perilaku tersebut. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kualitatif. Informan penelitian ini adalah pengguna dan pustakawan di Pusat Perpustakaan UIN Maulana Malik Ibrahim. Pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan observasi, wawancara mendalam, dan dokumentasi. Yang menjadi fokus pada penelitian ini adalah perilaku pengguna dalam menelusur informasi dan juga faktor yang melatarbelakangi perilaku pengguna tersebut. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa pada tahap starting yang menjadi pemicu pengguna menelusur informasi adalah adanya kebutuhan informasi pada dirinya, sebelum melakukan pencarian informasi pengguna sudah mempersiapkan daftar buku yang akan dicarinya. Pada tahap chaining sebelum mencari informasi pengguna cenderung mengkaitkan pengalaman yang telah dimilikinya dengan apa yang akan dicari yang berasal dari dosen, teman atau hanya dari silabus. Pengguna yang sedang mengerjakan tugas akhir sering mengkaitkan skripsi terdahulu dengan kebutuhan yang akan dicari. Pada tahap browsing rata-rata pengguna enggan menggunakan OPAC, katakunci yang sering digunakan pengguna adalah judul buku. Tahap differentiating pada tahap ini pengguna memilah-milah buku dengan cara melihat daftar isi pada buku lalu menuju sub bab yang diinginkan. Untuk tahap monitoring hanya pengguna yang sedang mengerjakan tugas akhir saja yang memantau informasi. Tahap extracting pada tahap ini rata-rata pengguna melipat buku untuk menandai informasi yang penting. Faktor yang melatarbelakangi perilaku pengguna dalam menelusur informasi di Pusat Perpustakaan UIN Maulana Malik Ibrahim adalah latarbelakang pekerjaan, pengetahuan pengguna, adanya pendidikan pemakai, dan level pengalaman pengguna. Saran untuk Pusat Perpustakaan UIN Maulana Malik Ibrahim adalah memperbaiki sistem informasi yang digunakan, menambah SDM untuk melayani penelusuran informasi dan meningkatkan kegitan pendidikan pemakai.
English Abstract
University’s library is a printed, recorded, and written works managerial institution. The main goal of university’s library is to fulfill the information need for supporting tri darma of the university. The emergence of such information needs motivates the users to search information, which result in the emergence of the user’s information searching behaviour. The user’s behaviour of searching information need to studied more, especially in Central Library of Maulana Malik Ibrahim Islamic State University, by analyzing the behaviour librarian will unnderstand what user’s need. This research aimed to find out the user’s behaviour in searching information and factors that form the background of that behavior. This reaserch used qualitative methods. Informans of this research is user and librarian at the Central Library of Maulana Malik Ibrahim Islamic State University. The data were collected through observation, in deep interview, and documentation. The focus of this reaserch is user’s behaviour in searching information and also the factors behind the user’s behavior. The research result shows that the needs of information triggered the users to search information in the starting phase, before searching the information, users have prepared the list of books to be searched. In the chaining phase, before searching the information, users tend to relate their experience with something that they will look for. That experience derived from professors, friends, or only based on syllabus. As users who work on the final project, they often link their current needs with the previous thesis. In the browsing phase, most of the users are reluctant to use OPAC, oftentimes they use the book’s title as the keyword. The following phase is differentiating, in this phase users sort out the book by looking at the table of contents and go to the wanted section. For the monitoring phase, only the users who work on the final project that monitoring the information. The last is extracting phase, in this phase most of the users fold the book to indicate the important information. Some factors that underlay the user’s behavior in searching information at the Central Library of Maulana Malik Ibrahim Islamic State University are job, user’s knowledge, user’s education, and the level of their experience. Suggestion for Central Library of Maulana Malik Ibrahim Islamic State University is to improve the used information system, add the human resources to serve information searching and increase user’s education activity.
