Abstract

Cryptocurrency is a form of money that is secured by cryptography, a technology that will keep safe any information from third parties, to pacify the transactions and to control its value over time. Cryptocurrency has no organization or institution who has authority to control it, which makes some people think that it is not safe. Many research has talking about cryptocurrency in its technological side. However, no study has ever been correlating this topic with economic growth. Using panel data regression, this thesis correlating BTC, which stands for Bitcoin, as the most known and expedienced type of cryptocurrency with GDP as the variable that represent economic growth. It also has 3 other variables as the control variable that will make sure the result to be unbiassed. Those are capital (K), labor (L), and Technology (A), as in the Solow’s growth theory which reviewing growth through its supply side, the input of production function. The sample are taken from 5 Asian countries with the highest number of Bitcoin usages (Japan, China, India, Singapore, Indonesia), with period that started from 2011 to 2016. It shows the data is 99% fit, or the independent variablesare able to provide almost all the information needed in explaining the change of the dependent variable. BTC itself has a negative significant result to GDP at the end.

English Abstract

Cryptocurrency adalah sebuah bentuk dari uang yang dijamin dengan kriptografi, teknologi yang akan menyimpan informasi dari pihak ketiga, untuk menenangkan transaksi dan mengendalikan nilainya dari waktu ke waktu. Cryptocurrency tidak memiliki organisasi atau institusi yang berwewenang untuk mengendalikannya, dimana hal tersebut membuat beberapa pihak berpikir bahwa cryptocurrency itu tidak aman. Banyak penelitian telah membahas tentang cryptocurrency di sisi teknologinya. Namun, belum ada penelitian yang menghubungkan topik ini dengan pertumbuhan ekonomi. Dengan menggunakan regresi data panel, tesis ini mengkorelasikan BTC, sebagai jenis kripto yang paling dikenal dan memiliki peminat terbanyak, dengan PDB sebagai variabel yang mewakili pertumbuhan ekonomi. Skripsi ini juga membahas 3 variabel lain sebagai variabel kontrol yang akan memastikan hasilnya menjadi jelas dan tidak bias. Variabel yang dimaksud adalah modal (K), tenaga kerja (L), dan teknologi (A), seperti pada teori pertumbuhan Solow yang mengkaji pertumbuhan melalui sisi penawarannya, atau fungsi produksi input. Sampel diambil dari 5 negara Asia dengan jumlah pemakaian Bitcoin tertinggi (Jepang, China, India, Singapura, Indonesia), dengan periode yang dimulai dari 2009 sampai 2016. Hasil dari penelitian menunjukkan data 94% fit, atau variabel independennya mampu menjelaskan perubahan variabel dependen. BTC sendiri memiliki hasil positif yang signifikan terhadap pertumbuhan ekonomi.
