Abstract
Penelitian ini ditujukan untuk mengetahui apakah ada korelasi antara kemampuan berbicara dan kemampuan mendengar pada mahasiswa universitas brawijaya tahun kedua. Sampel penelitian ini adalah 24 mahasiswa diambil dari kelas Intensive Speaking C dan E dan kelas Extensive Listening C dan D. Untuk mencapai tujuan ini, peneliti menggunakan metode kuantitatif dan teknik yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah teknik korelasi. Dalam penelitian ini, instrumen pertama yang digunakan adalah skor akhir kelas Intensive Speaking. Instrumen kedua adalah untuk kemampuan mendengar, yang diadaptasi dari tes TOEFL IBT Quick prep test. Tes ini terfokuskan kepada kemampuan mendengar, terutama aktivitas dengar dan centang. Tes tersebut dalam bentuk pilihan ganda. Dalam menganalisis data, peneliti menggunakan korelasi produk yang dikembangkan oleh Karl Pearson. Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa korelasi antara kemampuan berbicara dan kemampuan mendengar sangat rendah. Ini dibuktikan dengan nilai rxy (0.037) lebih rendah dari rtable di tingkat signifikan tabel 5% (0.274). Dengan data tersebut dianggap bahwa hipotesis alternatif (Ha) diterima dan hipotesis null (Ho) ditolak. Kesimpulan yang bisa didapat dari penelitian ini adalah ada suatu korelasi positif antara kemampuan berbicara dan kemampuan mendengar. Namun korelasi tersebut dianggap sangat lemah. Selain itu, peneliti memberi saran untuk guru bahasa Inggris, terutama yang bertanggung jawab untuk kelas Speaking dan kelas Listening. Guru bahasa inggris harus memberikan beberapa tes dan materi yang serupa dengan tes TOEFL dan TOEIC, karena tes tes tersebut adalah tes dimana biasanya murid mendapatkan kesulitan. Untuk peneliti yang ingin melakukan penelitian lebih lanjut, semoga penelitian ini menjadi kontribusi, terutama mereka yang bertujuan untuk menemukan korelasi diantara dua variabel.
English Abstract
This research was aimed to know whether or not there was a correlation between speaking skill and listening skill of the second year students at English Language Education Program, Universitas Brawijaya. The sample of this study were 24 students taken from Intensive speaking class C and E, and Extensive listening class C and D. To achieve this objective, the researcher used quantitative method and the technique used in this research was a correlational technique. In this research, the first instrument was the final score documentation of intensive speaking class. The second instrument was for listening skill, which is adapted from TOEFL IBT quick prep test. The test focused on the listening skill, specifically in listen and tick activity. The test was in the form of multiple choices. In analyzing the data, the researcher used correlation Karl Pearson product moment. The result of the research showed that the correlation between speaking skill and listening skill is very weak. It was proven by the value of rxy (0.037) was lower than rtable in the degree of significance 5% (0.274). It was considered that the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted and the null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected. In conclusion, there is a positive correlation between speaking skill and listening skill. However, the correlation is considered very weak. In addition, the researcher adds suggestion for the English teacher, especially those in charge of listening class. The English teacher should try to give some tests and materials that are similar to TOEFL test or TOEIC test, because those tests are where students usually got some difficulties on. For further researchers, hopefully this research can give a contribution, especially those who intended to find out the correlation between two variables.
