A Corpus-Driven Research On The Case Of Degree Adverbials Very, Really, Quite, And Pretty In Blog Authorship Corpus

Chaerunnisa, Erwanda Resti (2018) A Corpus-Driven Research On The Case Of Degree Adverbials Very, Really, Quite, And Pretty In Blog Authorship Corpus. Sarjana thesis, Universitas Brawijaya.

Abstract

English Abstract

Degree adverbial is one of essential elements to provide information about how much, how many, and to what extent. Based on that function, there are so many degree adverbials that can be used, some of them are very, really, quite, and pretty. These four are the most common out of all, seeing that they often are being used interchangeably without any specific reasons. However, as proven by other linguists, it seems that every word has their own preferences in terms of collocations and the semantic prosody that arise. Thus, the problems of this research that the researcher proposed are; (1) How does each degree adverbial very, really, quite, and pretty collocate in Blog Authorship Corpus?; (2) What is the semantic prosody of each degree adverbial very, really, quite, and pretty based on their collocations? Qualitative approach was employed to conduct this research while corpus method was used in collecting and analyzing the data with the help of corpus software WordSmith 4.0. The data source came from Blog Authorship Corpus, a non-annotated corpus, which can be easily accessed through its website. The result of analysis has shown that all degree adverbials collocate with words from both adjective and adverb word classes. Only really and quite are seen to collocate with verbs, while at the same time really also co-occurs with a preposition in a particular case. They mostly occur in medial position, differ only by their collocations forming several different patterns. Pleasant semantic prosody favored both very and quite, while neutral and unpleasant semantic prosody surround pretty and really respectively. Lastly, since this study, the researcher suggests for future research to extend the research into investigating the factors that may contribute in the differences of their preferences using a different genre of corpus such as British Academic Written English Corpus.
