Abstract
Penelitian ini membahas tentang persepsi siswa terhadap penggunaan role play untuk mengajar kemampuan berbicara. Sebagai negara yang menetapkan Bahasa Inggris sebagai sebuah bahasa asing, maka siswa membutuhkan sebuah teknik pengajaran yang dapat membuat mereka antusias di dalam proses belajar mengajar bahasa Inggris, terutama dalam kemampuan berbicara bahasa Inggris. Oleh karena itu, penulis dalam penelitian ini memiliki tujuan untuk mengetahui persepsi siswa mengenai teknik mengajar kemampuan berbicara yang digunakan oleh guru bahasa Inggris. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kuantitatif dengan metode penelitian survei. Subjek penelitian ini adalah siswa kelas XI SMK Negeri 3 Blitar yang berasal dari empat jurusan berbeda, yaitu jurusan pastry, akademi perhotelan, tata boga, dan tata kecantikan rambut dengan total 100 siswa sebagai sampel. Penelitian ini menggunakan kuisioner untuk pengumpulan data yang diadaptasi dari D’cruz, dkk (2013) yang terdiri atas enam sub-dimension yaitu general quality, knowledge, perceived effect on learning attitudes and communication skills, realism and facilitation in transition to wards, appropriateness and applicability, and debriefing session. Selain itu, kuisioner dalam penelitian ini menggunakan empat skala penilaian, yaitu sangat setuju, setuju, tidak setuju, dan sangat tidak setuju serta telah diterjemahkan terlebih dahulu ke dalam bahasa Indonesia. Analisis data dalam penelitian ini dilakukan secara kuantitatif berdasar theory dari Grey, dkk dan hasil penelitian ini ditampilkan dalam bentuk persentase. Hasil temuan dalam penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa siswa memiliki persepsi yang positif terhadap penggunaan role play untuk mengajar kemampuan berbicara. Hal ini dapat dilihat dari hasil rata – rata persentase secara keseluruhan sub dimensi mencapai level sangat tinggi yaitu 95.4% siswa setuju dengan pernyataan yang tersaji dalam kuisioner, dengan rincian general quality 99.0%, knowledge 96.5%, perceived effect on learning attitudes and communication skills 96.7%, realism and facilitation in transition to wards 83.0%, appropriateness and applicability 98.0%, debriefing session 99.0%. Penulis menyarankan bahwa penting bagi guru bahasa Inggris untuk mengetahui persepsi siswa terhadap teknik mengajar yang mereka gunakan agar tercapai tujuan belajar dan mengajar dalam bahasa Inggris. Penulis juga berharap siswa harus banyak melakukan latihan dalam berbicara bahasa Inggris dan penelitian ini dapat menjadi referensi bagi peneliti selanjutnya untuk melakukan peniltian yang lebih mendalam tentang persepsi siswa terhadap penggunaan role play.
English Abstract
This study presents about the students’ perception on the use of role play to teach speaking. As a country which English stands as a foreign language, students need a teaching technique which can make students enthusiastic in teaching and learning English process especially for speaking skill. Therefore, the writer as a researcher, in this study has a goal to know the students’ perception towards a teaching speaking technique used by the English teacher. This study used a quantitative approach with survey research as the research design. The subjects were the eleventh graders of SMK Negeri 3 Blitar who came from four different departments including pastry department, hotel academic department, food service department, and hair dressing department with in total 100 students as the sample. This study used questionnaire for data collection. The questionnaire were adapted from D’cruz, et.al (2013) which consist of six sub dimensions; general quality, knowledge, perceived effect on learning attitudes and communication skills, realism and facilitation in transition to wards, appropriateness and applicability, and debriefing session. Then, the questionnaires used four-scale scoring system including strongly agree, agree, disagree, and strongly disagree and was translated into Bahasa Indonesia. The data were analyzed quantitatively based on Grey’s, et.al theory and the result of this study was presented in the form of percentages. The findings of this study showed that the students have positive perception towards the use of role play in teaching speaking. It could be seen through the result of the average percentage of the whole sub dimensions got the very high level, that is 95.4% students agreed with the statements are provided in questionnaires. It is including general quality 99.0%, knowledge 96.5%, perceived effect on learning attitudes and communication skills 96.7%, realism and facilitation in transition to wards 83.0%, appropriateness and applicability 98.0%, and debriefing session 99.0%. The researcher suggests that the English teacher needs to know the students’ perception towards the teaching technique which is used to gain the goal of teaching and learning English process. The researcher expects students to practice English more to master English especially in speaking and this study can be as a reference for future researchers to conduct a deeper research about students’ perception towards the use of role play.
