Abstract

Sebagai salah satu keahlian yang harus dikuasai dalam pembelajaran bahasa asing, kemampuan berbicara memiliki peranan penting dalam berkomunikasi. Melalui berbicara, seseorang dapat menyampaikan informasi, ide, perasaan dan gagasan terhadap lawan bicaranya. Akan tetapi, sebagaian besar pebelajar masih memiliki masalah atau kesulitan dalam berbicara Bahasa Inggris meski telah mempelajari bahasa tersebut selama beberapa tahun. Mengingat pentingnya kemampuan berbicara tersebut, penilitian ini diadakan untuk menjawab dua rumusan masalah yakni: (1) apakah masalah-masalah yang dihadapi oleh Mahasiswa Program Studi Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris tahun pelajaran 2016/2017 dalam berbicara Bahasa Inggris dan (2) apakah strategi-strategi yang digunakan mahasiswa dalam menghadapi permasalahan tersebut. Subjek dalam penelitian ini dipilih dengan mempertimbangkan status mereka sebagai calon pendidik dimana memiliki kemampuan berbicara yang baik adalah hal yang dibutuhkan oleh mereka. Dengan menggunakan metode survei, sebanyak 103 kuesioner dibagikan kepada subjek dalam kelas Intensive Speaking. Penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa subjek masih mengalami permasalahan dalam berbicara Bahasa Inggris seperti inhibition (38.44%), mother-tongue use (25.47%), nothing to say (20.05%), dan low or uneven participation (16.04%). Untuk mengatasi permasalahan tersebut, subjek menggunakan beberapa strategi atau dikenal dengan istilah communication strategies. Sejumlah delapan strategi termasuk dalam kategori high level strategies (2.00 <nilai mean< 3.00) seperti appeal for help (2.43), stalling or time gaining strategy (2.37), approximation (2.33), use of all purpose-words (2.32), prefabricated patterns (2.21), circumlocution (2.11), non-linguistic signals (2.09), dan code-switching (2.01). Sedangkan lima strategi lain termasuk dalam kategori moderate level strategies (1.00 <nilai mean< 2.00) seperti topic avoidance (1.90), foreignizing (1.83), word coinage (1.79), message abandonment (1.58), dan literal translation (1.48). Berdasarkan hasil penelitian, beberapa saran atau masukan dibuat oleh peneliti. Untuk mengatasi permasalahan dalam berbicara, pendidik disarankan untuk mampu meningkatkan kepercayaan diri siswa, menjaga penggunaan Bahasa Inggris dalam kelas, memilih topik yang menarik minat siswa, dan mendorong siswa untuk menggunakan communication strategies. Peniliti juga menyarankan kepada penelitian selanjutnya untuk mengangkat tema yang berkaitan dengan cara efektif dalam pengajaran communication strategies kepada siswa.

English Abstract

As one of the importance skills in foreign language acquisition, speaking plays several roles in communication. It helps the speakers to deliver some information, ideas, feelings, and thought to the interlocutor. Yet, many learners still have some difficulties in speaking although they have been learning English for several years. Considering the importance of speaking, this study was conducted to answer to research problems namely: (1) what are the speaking problems faced by the second year students of English Language Education Program academic year 2016/2017 and (2) what are the communication strategies employed to overcome the problems. The subjects were taken based on the consideration of the status of the subjects as pre-service English teachers which should possess good proficiency in speaking. Using survey design to achieve the objectives of the study, 103 questionnaire were administered to the subjects in the Intensive Speaking class. It was found that the subjects still faced some problems in speaking such as inhibition (38.44%), mother-tongue use (25.47%), nothing to say (20.05%), and low or uneven participation (16.04%). In order to solve the problems, the subjects employed several strategies or as known as communication strategies. Eight strategies were in the high level strategies (2.00 <mean score< 3.00) such as appeal for help (2.43), stalling or time gaining strategy (2.37), approximation (2.33), use of all purpose-words (2.32), prefabricated patterns (2.21), circumlocution (2.11), non-linguistic signals (2.09), and code-switching (2.01). While the other strategies were included in the moderate level strategies (1.00 <mean score< 2.00) such as topic avoidance (1.90), foreignizing (1.83), word coinage (1.79), message abandonment (1.58), and literal translation (1.48). Based on the finding, some suggestions are made by the researcher. In order to solve the speaking problems, the teacher should be able to strengthen the students’ confidence, maintain the use of the target language, consider the topic of speaking activity and encourage the students to use communicative strategies. The researcher also suggests to raise the issue related to the effective way to teach communication strategies to students for the further study.
