Abstract
Idiom adalah serangkaian kata-kata yang masing-masing kata memiliki arti berbeda jika terjadi dalam isolasi. Oleh karena itu, pengetahuan idiom dan maknanya penting bagi penerjemah. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengklasifikasikan jenis-jenis ekspresi idiomatik dan strategi yang digunakan oleh penerjemah dalam menerjemahkan -dear John‖ Novel. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif dan metode penelitian analisis dokumen karena data diambil dari novel yang merupakan bahan tertulis. Sumber data penelitian ini adalah sebuah novel oleh Nicholas Sparks berjudul -dear John‖. Peneliti mengklasifikasikan jenis-jenis idiom berdasarkan teori oleh Seidl dan McMordie (1988), dan strategi penerjemahan oleh Mona Baker (1992). Penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa ada 99 data yang ditemukan dalam novel. Semua data mewakili 9 jenis idiom oleh Seidl dan McMordie (1988). Peneliti juga menemukan semua 4 strategi terjemahan oleh Mona Baker (1992) dalam menerjemahkan idiom dari novel. Dapat disimpulkan bahwa idiom yang paling umum ditemukan dalam novel adalah kata kerja phrasal dengan 33 kejadian. Untuk strategi penerjemahan, peneliti menemukan bahwa terjemahan dengan parafrase adalah strategi yang paling umum digunakan oleh penerjemah dengan 78 kejadian. Peneliti menyarankan para peneliti masa depan melakukan penelitian lebih lanjut tentang ekspresi idiomatik di objek yang berbeda, seperti lagu, cerita pendek, atau subtitle film.
English Abstract
Idiom is a set of words of which each word has different meanings if it occurs in isolation. Therefore, the knowledge of idiom and its meaning is important for a translator. This study aims to classify the types of idiomatic expressions and the strategies used by the translator in translating ―Dear John‖ novel. This research uses qualitative approach and document analysis research method since the data are taken from a novel which is written material. The data source of this research is a novel by Nicholas Sparks entitled ―Dear John‖. The researcher classifies the types of idioms based on theory by Seidl and McMordie (1988), and the translation strategies by Mona Baker (1992). This research shows that there are 99 data found in the novel. All the data represent the 9 types of idioms by Seidl and McMordie (1988). The researcher also found all the 4 translation strategies by Mona Baker (1992) in translating idioms from the novel. It can be concluded that the most common idioms found in the novel is phrasal verbs with 33 occurrences. For the translation strategies, the researcher found that translation by paraphrase is the most common strategies used by the translator with 78 occurences. The researcher suggests the future researchers conduct more research about idiomatic expressions in different object, such as songs, short stories, or movie subtitles.
