Abstract
Pergantian kode adalah fenomena umum dalam pengajaran bahasa asing. Fenomena ini juga terjadi di SMK Negeri 4 Malang selama proses belajar mengajar dan belajar bahasa Inggris. Oleh karena itu, penelitian ini dimaksudkan untuk mengetahui: (1) Jenis-jenis pengalihan kode yang digunakan oleh guru dan (2) keadaan guru bahasa Inggris melakukan peralihan kode selama proses belajar bahasa Inggris. Penelitian ini menggunakan deskriptif kualitatif sebagai desain penelitian. Para peserta adalah empat guru bahasa Inggris yang mengajar dalam empat kelas kelas XI Departemen Produksi Grafis. Ada tiga instrumen yang digunakan oleh peneliti dalam mengumpulkan data, yaitu smartphone, catatan lapangan dan panduan wawancara. Dalam pengamatan kelas, peneliti menggunakan smartphone untuk merekam proses pengajaran dan dia juga menggunakan catatan lapangan untuk menghindari data yang hilang. Setelah pengamatan ruang kelas dilakukan, peneliti mewawancarai guru bahasa Inggris untuk mendapatkan informasi terperinci tentang pergantian kode. Untuk menganalisis masalah penelitian, peneliti menggunakan teori Hoffmann. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa ada empat jenis switching kode yang digunakan oleh guru bahasa Inggris. Mereka adalah switching intra-sentensial, peralihan interensial, membuat switching lambang, dan menetapkan kesinambungan dengan speaker sebelumnya. Sementara itu, peneliti menemukan bahwa guru melakukan perhitungan kode dalam beberapa keadaan. Mereka adalah pengulangan yang digunakan untuk klarifikasi, mengutip orang lain, menjadi empatik tentang sesuatu, berbicara tentang topik tertentu dan mengklarifikasi konten pidato. Peneliti juga menemukan beberapa keadaan tambahan yang mempengaruhi guru bahasa Inggris untuk melakukan peralihan kode. Para guru menggunakan kode switching ketika mereka ingin memeriksa pemahaman siswa, untuk pindah ke aktivitas berikutnya, untuk memberikan penjelasan tata bahasa, dan untuk memberikan instruksi. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian, peneliti menyimpulkan bahwa switching kode adalah salah satu strategi pengajaran dalam mengajar Bahasa Inggris. Para guru menggunakan kode beralih untuk membantu siswa dalam memahami bahan dan instruksi guru. Oleh karena itu, untuk peneliti lebih lanjut, peneliti menyarankan untuk menganalisis lebih lanjut apakah ada korelasi antara switching kode guru dan prestasi siswa atau tidak.
English Abstract
Code switching is the common phenomenon in foreign language teaching. This phenomenon also happens at SMK Negeri 4 Malang during English teaching and learning process. Therefore, this study is intended to find out: (1) the types of code switching used by the teachers and (2) the circumstances of English teachers do code switching during teaching and learning process in English classroom. This study used descriptive qualitative as the research design. The participants were four English teachers who teach in four classes of XI grade of Graphic Production Department. There were three instruments used by the researcher in collecting the data, namely smartphone, a field note and interview guide. In the classroom observation, the researcher used smartphone to record the teaching process and she also used a field note to avoid the missing data. After the classroom observations were done, the researcher interviewed the English teacher to get detailed information about code switching. To analyze the research problems, the researcher used Hoffmann’s theory. The result of the study shows that there are four types of code switching that were used by English teachers. They are intra-sentential switching, inter- sentential switching, making emblematic switching, and establishing continuity with the previous speaker. Meanwhile, the researcher found that the teachers did code switching in some circumstances. They are repetition used for clarification, quoting somebody else, being emphatic about something, talking about a particular topic and clarifying the speech content. The researcher also found some additional circumstances that influence the English teachers to do code switching. The teachers used code switching when they want to check students’ understanding, to move to the next activity, to give grammar explanation, and to give instruction. Based on the result of the study, the researcher concludes that code switching is one of the teaching strategies in teaching English. The teachers used code switching to help students in understanding the material and the teachers’ instruction. Therefore, for further researchers, the researcher suggests to analyze further whether there is a correlation between teachers’ code switching and students’ achievement or not.
