Abstract
Masyarakat selalu memiliki standar keindahan yang perlu dimiliki, terkait dengan sifat fisik dan perilaku yang masyarakat anggap indah. Namun, representasi `cantik` dilakukan dengan hanya satu jenis kelamin tertentu, yaitu wanita, seperti yang dinyatakan oleh feminis Naomi Wolf dalam bukunya The Beauty Mitos (2002). Serigala percaya bahwa standar kecantikan ini adalah manifestasi dari diskriminasi gender. Untuk menekankan diskriminasi yang dialami perempuan, terutama pada abad ke-19 Cina, penulis menggunakan novel berjudul Snow Flower dan The Secret Fan sebagai objek analisis. Novel budaya 2005 ini oleh Lisa, seorang penulis Cina-Amerika, mencerminkan kondisi yang diwakili pada abad ke-19 Cina, yang membantu penulis untuk menganalisis latar belakang budaya yang menghasilkan standar kecantikan. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif untuk mengumpulkan data dari novel, dan juga menggunakan pendekatan feminisme sebagai kerangka teoritis utama. Studi ini berfokus untuk menandakan standar kecantikan Cina abad ke-19 yang ditunjukkan pada bunga salju novel Lisa See dan penggemar rahasia dan bagaimana mereka dibangun dalam budaya Cina. Kemudian, penelitian ini bertujuan untuk membahas bagaimana standar kecantikan digunakan untuk mendiskriminasi wanita di lisa see novel salju dan penggemar rahasia. Dalam melakukan penelitian ini, penulis mencapai kesimpulan. Pertama, penggambaran standar kecantikan pada abad ke-19 Cina dalam novel dapat dimanifestasikan dalam empat karakteristik yang berbudi luhur: kemunduran feminin dan kerapuhan, kesalehan dan kesuburan, kesusahan, dan kesuburan. Kedua, penelitian menunjukkan bahwa keyakinan filosofis dan agama pada abad ke-19 Cina termasuk Daoisme, Konfusianisme, dan Buddha, membentuk gagasan keindahan feminin. Ketiga, ada banyak diskriminasi yang dialami oleh karakter dalam novel yang terkait dengan standar kecantikan, seperti diungkapkan dalam teori mitos kecantikan oleh Naomi Wolf.
English Abstract
Society always has standards of beauty that need to be possessed, related to physical and behavior trait which the society considers beautiful. However, the representation of “beautiful” are conducted by only one specific gender, which is women, as stated by feminist Naomi Wolf in her book The Beauty Myth (2002). Wolf believes that these standards of beauty are the manifestation of gender discrimination. To emphasize the discrimination experienced by women, especially in 19th century China, the writer uses a novel entitled Snow Flower and the Secret Fan as the object of analysis. This 2005 cultural novel by Lisa See, a Chinese- American writer, reflects the represented condition in 19th century China, which was helping the writer to analyze the cultural background which produced beauty standards. This study uses qualitative approach to collect the data from the novel, and also uses feminism approach as the main theoretical framework. This study focuses to signify the nineteenth-century Chinese beauty standards that are shown in Lisa See’s novel Snow Flower and the Secret Fan and how they are constructed in the Chinese culture. Then, this study aims to discuss how the beauty standards are used to discriminate women in Lisa See’s novel Snow Flower and the Secret Fan. In conducting this study, the writer achieved some conclusion. First, the portrayal of beauty standards in 19th century China in the novel can be manifested in four virtuous characteristics: Feminine Smallness and Fragility, Filial Piety and Submission, Industriousness, and Fertility. Second, the study shows that philosophical and religious beliefs in 19th century China including Daoism, Confucianism, and Buddhism, were shaping the notion of feminine beauty. Third, there are many discriminations experienced by the characters in the novel related with beauty standards, as disclosed in Beauty Myth theory by Naomi Wolf.
