Abstract
Berdasarkan wawancara dengan guru bahasa Inggris SMPN 2 Batu, para siswa kelas delapan (8G) dari SMPN 2 Batu karena subjek penelitian ini mengalami kesulitan dalam membaca aktivitas pemahaman di kelas. Siswa merasa bosan dan sulit berkonsentrasi ketika menghadapi ujian membaca terutama dalam teks panjang. Selanjutnya, kemampuan siswa dalam mengidentifikasi kosakata menjadi masalah utama dalam membaca teks. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui bagaimana strategi P-Q-S-T-T meningkatkan keterampilan membaca siswa di kelas delapan SMPN 2 Batu pada tahun akademik 2015/2016. Oleh karena itu, untuk mencapai tujuan, peneliti melakukan penelitian tindakan kelas. Penelitian ini dilakukan dalam satu siklus di mana siklus memiliki 4 pertemuan. Peneliti menggunakan 3 instrumen dalam penelitian ini. Ada pedoman wawancara, catatan lapangan, dan tes. Data dianalisis dengan menghitung hasil pre-test dan post-test. Analisis post-test pada siklus pertama menunjukkan peningkatan yang signifikan dari pre-test ke post-test. Dalam pre-test, itu adalah 34,37% dari semua siswa. Ada 11 siswa yang mencapai nilai kelulusan minimum. Dalam post-test, 87,5% atau 28 siswa mencapai nilai kelulusan minimum. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa strategi P-Q-S-S-T berhasil meningkatkan keterampilan membaca siswa. Untuk saran, strategi P-Q-R-S-T memiliki pengaruh signifikan pada pencapaian pemahaman membaca. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian, direkomendasikan untuk guru bahasa Inggris untuk menggunakan strategi P-Q-R-S-T sebagai teknik pengajaran alternatif dalam mengajar bahasa Inggris terutama mengajar keterampilan membaca. Para siswa disarankan untuk menggunakan dan melatih kemampuan mereka untuk menguasai strategi P-Q-R-S-T sebagai teknik untuk meningkatkan kemampuan mereka dalam mengidentifikasi gagasan utama paragraf dan konteks teks. Untuk peneliti berikutnya yang ingin melakukan studi yang berhubungan dengan strategi P-Q-R-S-S-T dalam pengajaran pemahaman membaca disarankan untuk melakukan dengan menggunakan strategi P-Q-R-S-T yang terhubung dengan teknik lain seperti `strip komik` dalam meningkatkan keterampilan membaca siswa.
English Abstract
Based on the interview with the English teacher of SMPN 2 Batu, the students of the eighth grade (8G) of SMPN 2 Batu as the subjects of this research have difficulty in reading of comprehension activity in the class. Students felt bored and were hard to concentrate when facing reading exam especially in long text. Furthermore, the students ability in identifying the vocabulary became the main issue in reading a text. The objective of the present study was to know how P-Q-R-S-T strategy improves students reading skill in the eighth grade of SMPN 2 Batu in academic year 2015/2016. Therefore, to achieve the objective, the researcher conducted a classroom action research. This research was conducted in one cycle where the cycle had 4 meetings. The researcher used 3 instruments in this research. There were interview guideline, field note, and test. The data were analyzed by calculating the result of pre-test and post-test. The analysis of the post-test in first cycle showed the significant improvement from the pre-test to post-test. In pre-test, it was 34.37 % from all students; there was 11 students who achieved the minimum passing grade. In post-test, 87.5 % or 28 students achieved the minimum passing grade. The result of this research showed that P-Q-R-S-T strategy successfully improves the students reading skill. For suggestion, P-Q-R-S-T strategy has a significant effect on reading comprehension achievement. Based on the result of the research, it is recommended for the English teacher to used P-Q-R-S-T strategy as an alternative teaching technique in teaching English especially teaching reading skill. The students are suggested to use and train their ability to mastering P-Q-R-S-T strategy as a technique to improve their ability in identifying the main idea of a paragraph and a context of a text. For the next researchers who want to conducting studies that relate to P-Q-R-S-T strategy in teaching reading comprehension are suggested to conduct by using P-Q-R-S-T strategy connected with another technique like "Comic Strips" in improving the students reading comprehension skill.
