Abstract
Orientalisme adalah teori tentang divisi dunia ke barat dan timur. Divisi dunia ke Barat dan Timur dipengaruhi oleh pengalaman kolonial yang diberlakukan oleh negara-negara Barat menuju negara-negara Timur selama masa kolonial. Pengalaman kolonialisme membuat Barat mengakui Timur sebagai `Orient` atau `yang lain` yang artinya berbeda dari Barat. Portrayal of Eastern sebagai negara yang berbeda dari Barat tercermin melalui film oleh Sacha Baron Cohern, diktator. Dengan demikian, peneliti merumuskan masalah tentang bagaimana orientalisme tercermin di Sacha Baron Cohern adalah diktator. Fokus penelitian ini adalah penggambaran negara-negara Timur di salah satu film buatan Western, diktator sebagai cerminan orientalisme. Data diambil dari beberapa adegan yang menunjukkan bentuk orientalisme dalam bentuk layar yang ditangkap. Studi ini mempekerjakan teori mise en adegan yang membingkai sebagai alat untuk menganalisis data yang dipilih. Layar yang ditangkap kemudian dikelompokkan menjadi empat hubungan daya orientalisme yang bergerak dengan model wacana kekuatan budaya, kekuatan moral, kekuatan intelektual dan kekuatan politik. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan adanya orientalisme dalam film diktator. Orientalisme ditunjukkan dalam penggambaran Aladeen sebagai pemimpin Wadiya sebagai negara Timur Tengah fiksi dan deskripsi Wadiya dibandingkan dengan Amerika dalam beberapa aspek seperti perspektif budaya, moral, intelektual dan politik.
English Abstract
Orientalism is a theory about the division of the world into Western and Eastern. The division of the world into Western and Eastern is influenced by the colonial experience imposed by Western countries towards Eastern countries during the colonial period. Experience of colonialism makes Western recognizes Eastern as "the orient" or "the other" which means different from Western. The portrayal of Eastern as a different country from the Western is reflected through the movie by Sacha Baron Cohern, The Dictator. Thus, the researcher formulates the problem on how orientalism is reflected in Sacha Baron Cohern’s The Dictator. The focus of this study is the depiction of Eastern countries in the one of western-made films The Dictator as a reflection of orientalism. The data are taken from some of the scenes that indicate forms orientalisme in the form of screen captured. The study employs the theory of mise en scene that is framing as a tool to analyze the selected data. Those screen captureds are then grouped into four Orientalism power relations that move with the Discourse model of cultural power, moral power, intellectual power and political power. The results of this study indicate the presence of Orientalism in the film The Dictator. Orientalism is shown in the depiction Aladeen as leader of Wadiya as a fictional Middle East country and the description of Wadiya compared to America in some aspects such as cultural, moral, intellectual and political perspectives.
