English Abstract
Debate has noticeably been penetrating educational practice. It has been deemed as an effective tool for critical thinking and for L1 and L2 language development. Debate flourishes in high school over Indonesia and initiates educators to bring debate in teaching English skill, especially speaking. The objectives of this study are to know the procedure of debate implemented in teaching speaking, to know the teaching speaking activities conducted after debating s upon the implementation of debate in teaching speaking. This study used qualitative research design. The data sources were the tenth grade multimedia 1 students and the English teacher of the tenth grade Multimedia 1 of SMKN 1 Sampit. The technique to collect the data were classroom observation, interview with the English teacher and questionnaire for the students. To analyze the data, this study used a descriptive qualitative analysis. The findings of this study exhibited the procedure debate, teaching speaking activities and students s upon the implementation of debate. The debate format utilized by the teacher is Australasian debate format. Australasian debate is a merger format of Australian and Asian parliamentary debate. This format entailed two teams with three speakers of each team. The procedures of the debate started with case building time, delivering argument with speaker arrangement: 1st Government, 1st Opposition, 2nd Government, 2nd Opposition, 3rd Government, 3rd Opposition, Opposition Reply and Government Reply and post-debate deliberation. After debating, the teacher conducted teaching speaking activities to improve students speaking skill by drilling the students to produce English speech sound correctly. Students responses upon the implementation of debate in teaching speaking were 43% challenging, 38% intimidating, 38% boring, 81% interesting, 79% delighting and between 75% up to 87% improved students competency in speaking and English skills, Reading, Writing, and Listening skill. This study concludes that debate is implemented well in teaching speaking. Debate can stimulate the students to speak up and develop English skills. It carries a systematic way in teaching speaking and provides an opportunity for the students to be critical thinkers and competent in speaking. Its effectiveness ascribes the ability to integrate the four language skills, stimulate learners to be active, acclaim as fun and enjoyable, and engage the students in interactive activities that entail working collaboratively to negotiate meaning.
