Abstract

Critical Discourse Analysis that is proposed by Fairclough (1995) consists of three elements; those are text analysis, discourse practice, and socio-cultural practice. The writer conducted this study to find out the interpretation and the impact of ASEAN Motto “One Vision, One Identity, One Community” based on three dimensional models theory by Norman Fairclough (1995). This study attemps to answer three problems: how is the textual analysis of ASEAN Motto “One Vision, One Identity, One Community”, what are the interpretations of ASEAN Motto by the students of Faculty of Cultural Studies batch 2012 of Universitas Brawijaya, and how is the impact of ASEAN Motto towards the students of Faculty of Cultural Studies class of 2012 of Universitas Brawijaya. This study used qualitative approach in analyzing the slogan of ASEAN Motto “One Vision, One Identity, One Community”. Document or content analysis is applied in this study since it used the ASEAN Motto as the primary data source. The research participants in this study are from the students of Faculty of Culture Studies class of 2012 of Universitas Brawijaya.This study analyzed the interpretation and the impact of the ASEAN Motto “One Vision, One Identity, One Community”. The writer interviewed the students of Faculty of Culture Studies of Universitas Brawijaya class of 2012. The result of this study shows that the ASEAN Motto reflectsthe ASEAN leaders persuasion to the readers by using the word “one” and “community” which are ideologically contested and some of linguistic features which are included in it. In the discursive practice, this research has revealed that the main goal of text production and text interpretations of ASEAN Motto “One Vision, One Identity, One Community” is fulfilled well, since it is proven by the students’ interpretation. In the level of social practice, the motto has persuasive impact to the student but they are still not ready yet of ASEAN Community 2015. In conclusion, the ASEAN Motto can be analyzed by linguistic point of view, specifically in critical discourse analysis. This study has revealed that ASEAN Motto is made to equate the spirit of ASEAN people to have one goal and identity to prepare ASEAN Community in 2015. For further research, the next researchers are expected to be updated about the recent study about critical discourse analysis so the next researcher can be more inspired in conducting the research.
