Abstract
Berbicara adalah proses membangun dan berbagi makna melalui penggunaan simbol verbal dan non-verbal. Saat ini, guru perlu mempertimbangkan lebih banyak tentang keterampilan berbicara siswa. Seperti yang diketahui berbicara adalah aspek paling penting yang perlu dikuasai dengan cara mendukung kegiatan komunikasi. Penelitian ini dimaksudkan untuk mengetahui masalah yang dihadapi oleh siswa dalam melakukan berbicara dan faktor-faktor yang mempengaruhi kinerja berbicara. Instrumen yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah daftar periksa observasi, panduan wawancara dan lembar kuesioner. Peserta penelitian ini adalah 55 siswa VIII Grader dari dua kelas (VIIIA dan VIIIB) dan satu guru bahasa Inggris. Daftar periksa observasi dimaksudkan untuk mengamati aktivitas di kelas antara siswa dan guru. Wawancara itu disampaikan kepada guru dengan cara menemukan masalah dan faktor dalam berbicara dari perspektif guru. Kuesioner didistribusikan kepada siswa di dua kelas. Kuesioner terdiri dari tiga bagian beragam, yaitu: masalah dalam berbicara, faktor-faktor yang mempengaruhi kinerja dan strategi berbicara dari siswa untuk mengatasi masalah tersebut. Temuan penelitian menunjukkan bahwa sebagian besar siswa menghadapi beberapa masalah dalam berbicara. Ada empat masalah yang disebutkan dalam penelitian ini, yaitu: penghambatan, tidak ada yang perlu dikatakan, partisipasi rendah atau tidak merata, dan bahasa ibu. Masalah yang sebagian besar dihadapi oleh siswa dalam penelitian ini adalah penggunaan bahasa ibu. Sementara itu, hasil lain dalam penelitian ini adalah faktor-faktor yang mempengaruhi masalah. Dalam penelitian ini ada dua kategori tentang faktor-faktor yang memengaruhi masalah siswa. Kategori pertama adalah faktor yang memotivasi siswa untuk berbicara, seperti umpan balik guru dan motivasi untuk berbicara. Kategori kedua adalah faktor-faktor yang menarik perhatian siswa dalam kinerja, seperti pengetahuan topikal, kemampuan mendengarkan dan kepercayaan diri.
English Abstract
Speaking is the process of building and sharing meaning through the use of verbal and non-verbal symbols. Nowadays, teachers need to consider more about the students speaking skill. As known speaking is the most crucial aspect that needs to be mastered in the way to support communication activity. This research is meant to find out the problems faced by students in performing speaking and the factors that influence speaking performance. The instruments used in this research were observation checklist, interview guide and questionnaire sheet. The participants of this research were 55 students VIII grader of two classes (VIIIA and VIIIB) and one English teacher. The observation checklist was meant to observe the activity in the classroom between students and teacher. The interview was delivered to the teacher in the way to find the problem and factor in speaking from the teacher’s perspective. The questionnaires were distributed to the students in two classes. The questionnaire consisted of three diverse part, namely: problems in speaking, factors influence speaking performance and strategy from the students to overcome the problem. The finding of the research indicated that most of students faced some problems in speaking. There are four problems that mentioned in this research, namely: inhibition, nothing to say, low or uneven participation, and mother tongue. The problem that mostly faced by students in this research was mother tongue use. Meanwhile, the other results in this research are the factors that influence the problems. In this research there are two categories about the factors that influenced students’ problem. The first category was the factors that motivated students to speak, such as teacher’s feedback and motivation to speak. The second category was the factors that attracted students speaking performance down, such as topical knowledge, listening ability and confidence.
