English Abstract
Online games have been gaining young people’s interest, and luring them into craze and addiction. Refusing is one of certain attitudes that create along playing online games. Thus, this study is conducted to analyze some refusal strategies that are uttered by Indonesian online gamers in Seal Online private server. This study uses quantitative approach and employing Takahashi and Beebe’s Semantic Formula to analyze the data. The data are gathered using Discourse Completion Test (DCT) developed by Takahashi and Beebe (1987) and modified to reach the objectives. This study reveals that Indonesian online gamers preferred using indirect strategies to the direct ones. It is found that the participants realize their refusal by combining the strategies to minimize the offence to the adresser. In two social status relationships, the participants tend to refuse in combination of one up to five strategies. The two-strategy combination is the most frequently used by the participants. There are some factors influencing the participants’ refusal act, they are age and gender difference, and also social relationship. The conclusion of this study shows that Indonesian gamers avoid social disharmony through indirect strategies. The participants mostly state an explanation or reason and/or combination with other indirect strategies in their utterances. By doing this study, the writer suggests the findings of this study be a reference for future research. The writer also suggests the future researcher in the same field study have a bigger population with more representative samples or make a comparative study to see the behaviour differences in refusing from one game to another.
