Abstract

English is an important language that has to be mastered. English is called as an important language because English can engage many people in all aspects of life. In education aspects, the Ministry of National Education in Indonesia has an obligation to apply English as a compulsory language subject. During the English teaching and learning process, the students of 10 IIS 3 at SMAK Kolese Santo Yusup Malang have good activeness although 10 IIS 3 class just a regular class. Sometimes, the students of 10 IIS 3 feel ashamed and do not have any bravery to ask the material that they do not understand. This study was aimed to find out the questioning strategies applied by the English teacher during the teaching and learning process of 10 IIS 3. There were two problems; (1) What are the questioning strategies applied by an English teacher in teaching and learning process (2) Which questioning strategies that encourage the students to be more active during the teaching and learning process? The researcher used qualitative research methodology with case study design to know the questioning strategies applied by the English teacher in 10 IIS 3 class. Since questioning is one of the teacher’s basic strategies that almost all teachers apply it. The data of this research collected through videotaping, field note, and interview. The first finding of this study was the teacher of 10 IIS 3 applied wh-questions in teaching and learning process. From 118 questions, wh-questions took 78 questions and yes/no questions took 40 questions. Thus, wh-questions became the major part of the teacher questions. The second finding shows that from the six stages of bloom taxonomy theory, analyzing took 25.42% and questions became the major questions that can encourage the students to be more active during the teaching and learning process. Based on the findings, the researcher expects that this study will be useful for English teacher to find more appropriate audio visual teaching media to encourage the students’ activeness during the teaching and learning process. Finally, this study will also be useful for further researchers as a reference to conduct better researches later with more sources.
