Abstract
Saat ini, dalam pembelajaran bahasa, guru bahasa Inggris sebagai instruktur bahasa memainkan peran yang berpengaruh dalam keberhasilan pembelajaran. Strategi dan teknik yang diterapkan dapat menentukan hasil pembelajaran. Kualitas guru bahasa Inggris pasti memengaruhi kualitas siswa, dan kualitas guru bahasa Inggris dapat dilihat dari siswa. Dalam pembelajaran bahasa, permintaan untuk guru-guru bahasa Inggris yang berkualifikasi tinggi menjadi kebutuhan terpenting untuk meningkatkan kemampuan menggunakan bahasa Inggris sebagai bahasa universal. Penelitian ini dimaksudkan untuk mengetahui angka guru bahasa Inggris yang ideal yang sesuai dengan persepsi siswa. Kuesioner dikerahkan dengan menggunakan responden dari 428 (181 pria dan 247 perempuan) siswa sekolah menengah atas, kuesioner diberikan untuk melihat aspek seperti apa yang paling dihargai siswa yang harus dimiliki oleh guru bahasa Inggris yang ideal. Kuesioner terdiri dari empat bagian yang beragam, yaitu: Kompetensi Pedagogis, Kompetensi Kepribadian, Kompetensi Sosial dan Kompetensi Profesional. Kuesioner terdiri dari 47 item, dan sistem penilaian empat skala diterapkan untuk menghitung hasilnya. Penelitian ini dianggap sebagai penelitian kuantitatif dengan pendekatan survei, dan hanya menggunakan observasi dan kuesioner sebagai instrumen pengumpulan data. Ada dua masalah penelitian yang akan dijawab dalam penelitian ini, yaitu: (1) Apa persepsi siswa dari guru bahasa Inggris yang ideal dan (2) apa kriteria tertentu dari guru bahasa Inggris yang ideal yang sesuai dengan siswa. Temuan penelitian menunjukkan bahwa di antara empat kompetensi yang beragam, kompetensi kepribadian adalah kompetensi yang paling menguntungkan untuk ditemukan di guru bahasa Inggris yang ideal. Setelah itu, datang ke tempat kedua adalah kompetensi pedagogis, diikuti oleh kompetensi profesional di tempat ketiga dan di tempat terakhir adalah kompetensi sosial. Di antara kompetensi lain, kompetensi kepribadian tampaknya menjadi yang paling menguntungkan untuk berkontribusi lebih banyak untuk menciptakan sosok guru bahasa Inggris yang ideal mengenai persepsi siswa. Dengan kata lain, dapat diasumsikan bahwa aspek kepribadian dari setiap guru tampaknya sangat penting untuk menciptakan kimia yang kuat dan perasaan kepercayaan terhadap guru dan siswa untuk memperoleh pengajaran dan pembelajaran yang bermakna.
English Abstract
Nowadays, in language learning, English teachers as the language instructors play such an influential role in the success of the learning. The strategies and techniques applied might determine the outcome of the learning. The quality of the English teachers surely affects the quality of the students, and the quality of the English teacher can be seen from the students. In language learning, the demand for eminently qualified English teachers becomes a paramount necessity in order to enhance the ability of using the English language as the universal language. This research is meant to find out the figure of an ideal English teacher conforming to the students‟ perceptions. The questionnaires were deployed by using the respondents of 428 (181 male and 247 female) senior high school students, the questionnaires were administered to see what kind of aspect that the students value the most to be possessed by an ideal English teacher. The questionnaire consists of four diverse parts, namely: pedagogical competence, personality competence, social competence and professional competence. The questionnaire consists of 47 items, and four-scale scoring system was applied to calculate the results. This research is considered as quantitative research with survey approach, and using only observation and questionnaire as the instruments of collecting the data. There are two research problems to be answered in this research, namely: (1) what are the students‟ perceptions of an ideal English teacher and (2) what are the certain criteria of an ideal English teacher conforming to the students. The findings of the research indicate that among the four diverse competence, personality competence is the most favorable competence to be found in an ideal English teacher. Afterwards, come in second place is pedagogical competence, followed by professional competence in the third place and in the last place is social competence. Among other competence, personality competence seems to be the most favorable one to contribute more to create the figure of an ideal English teacher regarding the perceptions of the students. In another word, it can be assumed that personality aspect of every teacher seems to be vital to create such strong chemistry and feeling of trust for both teacher and students in order to derive meaningful teaching and learning.
