Abstract
Film adalah seni modern dan populer yang dibuat untuk bisnis dan hiburan. Entah bagaimana, sebuah film terkenal sebagai media hiburan yang bertujuan hanya untuk menghibur, tetapi kebanyakan orang umumnya tidak menyadari bahwa setiap film membawa pesan. Film adalah jenis media massa dengan semua kekuatannya pada premis orang dan sering digunakan sebagai instrumen untuk menyebarkan semuanya termasuk hegemoni oleh penguasa. Pada 2012, Hollywood menghasilkan film berjudul The Dictator. Film ini membandingkan kediktatoran dan demokrasi yang menggambarkan kediktatoran yang buruk dan demokrasi sebaik untuk menunjukkan keunggulan demokrasi. Penelitian ini menganalisis tentang bagaimana film diktator menjadi hegemoni barat dengan menggunakan teori hegemoni yang diusulkan oleh Anthony Gramsci dan Studi Film oleh Louis Giannetti. Studi ini menemukan beberapa aspek yang menunjukkan keunggulan demokrasi yang diidentifikasi sebagai Barat diwakili dalam Film Diktator, aspek-aspek seperti demokrasi sebagai kekuatan terbesar, demokrasi sebagai tujuan masyarakat, demokrasi sebagai budaya terbesar, dan demokrasi sebagai Konstitusi terbesar ditemukan di film. Selain menemukan gambar-gambar yang diidentifikasi sebagai keunggulan demokrasi, penelitian ini juga menemukan hubungan antara film diktator dan invasi Irak. Beberapa acara dalam film diktator diadaptasi dari Invasi Irak, beberapa acara dibuat sama dengan invasi Irak dan beberapa acara dimodifikasi. Film diktator tidak hanya film yang sangat rumit dan kompleks, tetapi juga ambivalen. Film Diktator mengkritik orang Barat yang percaya bahwa invasi Irak bukan keputusan yang tepat, pemerintah Barat yang berperang sebagai solusi, negara-negara Arab yang menempatkan Israel sebagai musuh mereka, dan orang-orang dari negara kediktatahan yang memegang ideologi mereka . Meskipun kritik diarahkan ke kedua belah pihak, film diktator masih menunjukkan bahwa mereka berada di sisi barat
English Abstract
Movie is a modern and popular art which is created for business and entertainment. Somehow, a movie is reputed as a media entertainment which purpose is only to entertain, but most people are generally unaware that every movie brings a message. Movie is a kind of mass media with all of its power in people premise and is often used as the instrument to spread everything including hegemony by the ruler. In 2012, Hollywood produced a movie entitled The Dictator. This movie compares dictatorship and democracy which depicts the dictatorship as bad and democracy as good in order to show the superiority of democracy. This study analyzes on how The Dictator movie becomes the Western hegemony by using the theory of hegemony proposed by Anthony Gramsci and movie studies by Louis Giannetti. This study finds some aspects that show the superiority of the democracy which is identified as western represented in The Dictator movie, aspects such as democracy as the greatest power, democracy as a people’s goal, democracy as the greatest culture, and democracy as the greatest constitution are found in the movie. Besides finding the pictures which is identified as the superiority of democracy, this study also finds the relation between The Dictator movie and the Iraq Invasion. Some events in The Dictator movie are adapted from Iraq Invasion, some events are made the same with Iraq invasion and some events are modified. The Dictator movie is not only very complicated and complex movie, but also ambivalent. The Dictator movie criticizes the westerners who believe that the Iraq invasion was not the right decision, the western government who took war as a solution, the Arabian countries who put Israel as the enemy of them, and the people from dictatorship nation who hold their ideology. Even though the criticism are directed to the two sides, The Dictator movie still shows that they are in the western side
