Abstract
Penelitian ini meneliti prinsip kooperatif yang digunakan oleh para pemain utama di film The Expendables. Ada tiga masalah penelitian, diantaranya: (1) Apa sajakah maksim-maksim yang di patuhi oleh para pemain di film The Expendables?; (2) Apa sajakah maksim-maksim yang di langgar oleh para pemain di film The Expendables?; (3) Apa sajakah arti di setiap maksim? Dalam penelitian ini, penulis menggunakan penelitian deskriptif kualitatif. Data yang digunakan adalah ucapan-ucapan dari para karakter utama di film The Expendables yang mengandung Prinsip Cooperatif. Penulis menemukan 67 maksim yang digunakan oleh para pemain utama di film The Expendables. Di penelitian ini, penulis menemukan seluruh maksim menurut prinsip kooperatif yang diutarakan oleh Grice. Penulis dapat mengindentifikasi pola umum dari prinsip kooperatif yang terdiri dari 16 maksim kuantitas, 20 maksim hubungan, 23 maksim cara dan 8 maksim kualitas. Di film ini, penulis juga menemukan 16 maksim yang di langgar oleh para pemain utama. Maksim tersebut terdiri dari 5 pelanggaran maksim kuantitas, 2 pelanggaran maksim kualitas, 9 pelanggaran maksim hubungan. Pada film ini, penulis tidak dapat menemukan pelanggaran maksim cara. Dapat disimpulkan bahwa semua maksim yang dikemukakan oleh Grice yang mana adalah maksim kualitas, maksim kuantitas, maksim hubungan, dan maksim cara digunakan pada film The Expendables dan mereka seringkali menggunakan maksim cara. Tapi disisi lain, para pemain utama di film ini juga sering kali melanggar maksim-maksim yang ada daripada mengikuti prinsip dari maksim itu sendiri. Pada akhirnya, arti dari ucapan para karakter di film ini dengan menggunakan maksim bermacam-macam. Penulis menyarankan kepada para peneliti selanjutnya untuk meneliti prinsip kooperatif dengan objek lain seperti contohnya novel, talk-show, atau radio. Penulis berharap bahwa adanya penelitian ini dapat dipergunakan sebagai referensi untuk peneliti selanjutnya yang ingin meneliti dalam bidang yang sama. Hal ini dapat memberikan informasis, tidak hanya untuk siswa Bahasa Inggris, tetapi juga untuk orang lain yang membutuhkan informasi tentang novel, talk-show, atau radio.
English Abstract
This study investigates cooperative principle used by the main characters of The Expendables movie. There are three problems of the study, namely (1) What are the obeyed maxims found in the dialog of the main characters of The Expendables movie?; (2) What are the flouted maxims found in the dialog of the main characters of The Expendables movie?; (3) What are the meanings in every maxim? In this study, the writer used descriptive qualitative approach. The data were the utterances of the main characters of The Expendables movie which contain Cooperative Principles. The writer found 67 maxims used by the main characters in The Expendables movie. In this research the writer found all of the Maxims based on Grice’s Cooperative Principles. The writer could identify the general pattern of the cooperative principles which consist of 16 maxims of quantity, 20 maxims of relation, 23 maxims of manner, and 8 maxims of quality. The writer also found 16 maxims which are flouted by the main characters in this movie. There are 5 instances of flouting the quantity maxim, 2 instances of flouting the quality maxim, and 9 instances of flouting the relation maxim. The writer could not find utterances flouting the manner maxim in this movie. It can be concluded that all of the Gricean maxims which are maxim of quality, maxim of quantity, maxim of relation, and maxim of manner are used in The Expendables movie and they mostly used the maxims of manner. On the other hand, the main characters in this movie also flouts the maxims instead of following the principle of maxim itself. In the end, the meanings of the characters in this movie by using the maxims are varied. The writer suggests that the next researchers conduct the study of cooperative principles in different object for example novel, talk show, or radio shows. Finally, it is hoped that this present study can be used as a reference for the next researchers who want to conduct the study in the same field. It can give information, not only for English students but also for other people who need information about novel, talk show, or radio shows.
