Abstract

Banyak siswa di negara-negara yang menempatkan Bahasa Inggris sebagai Bahasa Asing, seperti hal nya di Indonesia kesulitan dalam belajar bahasa Inggris. terutama siswa di tingkat SMP. Masalah utama dari mereka adalah karena bahasa Inggris sangat berbeda dengan bahasa asli mereka. Khususnya ketika belajar keterampilan membaca. Membaca adalah salah satu keterampilan bahasa Inggris yang harus dikuasai oleh siswa di sekolah. Masalah yang sering terjadi ketika siswa diminta untuk memahami teks. Mereka kesulitan untuk mendapatkan informasi dari teks karena masalah pemahaman kosa kata. Berdasarkan penelitian awal (preliminary study) yang dilakukan di MTs Ibnu Hajar Gondanglegi, terutama di VIII-A Class, sebagian besar siswa mendapat kesulitan pada pemahaman arti kata-kata dalam teks. Dengan demikian, peneliti mengusulkan strategi DRTA untuk meningkatkan kemampuan membaca dan memahami teks di kelas VIII-A MTs Ibnu Hajar Gondanglegi. Dengan menggunakan DRTA Strategi siswa dibimbing untuk membaca langkah demi langkah berdasarkan tahapan DRTA. Pada tahap pre-reading dari strategi DRTA, sebelum membaca, siswa dipandu untuk mengingat kembali pengetahuan mereka untuk memberikan prediksi terhadap teks Penelitian ini menggunakan penelitian tindakan kelas untuk mengatasi Masalah siswa berkaitan dengan kemampuan membaca pemahaman. Instrumen penelitian yang digunakan adalah wawancara, angket, daftar pengamatan, catatan lapangan dan test tulis. Penelitian ini dilakukan dalam dua siklus yang terdiri dari dua pertemuan pada setiap siklus. Data dianalisis secara kualitatif dan kuantitatif.

English Abstract

Many students in EFL countries such as in Indonesia get difficulty in study English especially students in junior high school level. The main problem of them is because English is very different from their native language especially when learning reading. Reading is one of English skill that has to be mastered by the students in the school. This problem often occurs when the students are asked to comprehend the text. They get difficulties to get the information of the text because they are lack on vocabulary. Based on the preliminary study that was conducted at MTs Ibnu Hajar Gondanglegi, especially in VIII-A Class, most of the students got difficulties on understanding the meaning of the words in the text. Thus, the researcher proposed DRTA strategy to improve students` reading comprehension ability of VIII-A class at MTs Ibnu Hajar Gondanglegi. Through DRTA Strategy students are guided to read the text step by step based on DRTA stages. In pre-reading stages of DRTA, students are guide to invite their background knowledge by giving predictions of the text before they read This research used classroom action research to overcome students Problems related to the reading comprehension ability. The research instruments used were interview guide, questionnaire, observation checklist, field note and reading text. The research was conducted in two cycles consisting of two meetings per each cycle. The data were analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively. From the result of the study, it was found that DRTA can overcome students` problem on reading comprehension. It is supported by the accomplishment of criteria of success. These improvements are seen by the students` score. The result of preliminary studies shows only 44,4 % of the students passed the standard minimum score. While in post test cycle I the score was 72,2 % of students passed the standard minimum score. And in post test of cycle II the score of the post test was 77, 7% of the students who passed the standard minimum score. In addition, teacher who used DRTA strategy should pay attention on reading material chosen. This strategy also can be used when reading material is never seen by the students before because it related with making predictions activity in this strategy. Besides, the researcher also suggested to further researcher who will conduct a research by using DRTA strategy for other types of text.
