Abstract
There are many factors in learning, especially in learning English as second language. Motivation is one of the factors for someone to learn English. With motivation, people will make an effort to realize their dream. The word motivation itself is derived from word wovere, which means ‘to move’. Based on its influence, motivation is divided into two, they are intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. An example of motivation is often shown using many media around us to encourage people, one of them is movie. English Vinglish, a movie from India, is one example of film that teaches about motivation of someone in learning English. The approach used in this research is qualitative descriptive, which presented data result in a form of description. Discourse analysis chose as the technique to analyze the data, since discourse analysis focuses on examining the language use in a text. The primary data of the research is English Vinglish’s movie script and scenes, where the researcher chose only certain parts, which related to the discussion. The focus of the analysis is Shashi’s motivation shown in the movie, and classified them into intrinsic or extrinsic based on the influence. The result of the data showed that Shashi received many influences for her motivation to learn English from her environment, people around her, also from herself. Shashi’s motivation in learning English according to its influence are direct experience, chance, comfortable learning environment, understanding, appreciation, support, help, and reward as the extrinsic motivation. While her intrinsic motivations are need, strong will, desire of respect and acknowledgement.
