Mudijatmoko, Arga Brahmaditya (2016) Countertypes Of Male And Female In The Movie Her By Spike Jonze. UNSPECIFIED thesis, Universitas Brawijaya.
Abstract
English Abstract
The way we see each other can be determined based on oversimplified assumption about people rooted on particular traits, sex, race, age, and etc. This is what our culture calls as stereotyping. Since stereotyping is often false, it can lead to prejudice and gender discrimination. Furthermore, there are certain traditional gender stereotype that are carried among the society through media. However, there is also according to Nachbar and Lause (1992) a positive stereotype that counters the negative stereotype in literary studies called countertype. The writer conducted a study about countertype of male and female in the movie Her. This study used qualitative approach in relation the use of descriptive analysis using conversation, monologue, and scene between characters of the movie Her as the main data. This study reveals that there are several traditional gender stereotypes such as for men to be: less sensitive, focus on toughness, and objectify sex. While as for women to be: inexperienced, passive, and dependent. Those stereotypes are being countered through the depiction of the characters in the movie. The main character Theodore depicted as a man who has a character of a sensitive, soft, and did not objectify sex. While the female characters depicted as an experienced, active, and independent type of women.
