Abstract
Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengembangkan pemahaman bacaan dari siswa kelas 8 SMPN 13 Malang tahun ajaran 2014/2015 dengan pengaplikasian English Talking Book sebagai media pembelajaran dalam membaca teks naratif. Berdasarkan penelitian awal yang dilakukan oleh peneliti di kelas 8C, 58% atau 19 dari 33 siswa gagal mencapai kriteria kelulusan minimal pada ujian membaca teks naratif. Dimana kriteria kelulusan minimal adalah 75. Dan hanya 14 siswa yang mampu mencapai kriteria kelulusan minimal tersebut. Untuk mengatasi permasalahan tersebut, maka English Talking Book diimplementasikan. Penelitian ini merupakan Penelitian Tindakan Kelas. Terdapat beberapa alat yang diperlukan untuk mengumpulkan data, yaitu pedoman wawancara, daftar observasi, catatan lapang, tes siswa dan kuisioner siswa. Nilai siswa diperoleh dari tes membaca, sedangkan respon siswa terhadap English Talking Book diperoleh dari daftar observasi, catatan lapang dan kuisioner. Terdapat dua kriteria keberhasilan dalam penelitian ini. Pertama, penelitian ini dinilai sukses jika 75% dari siswa mampu mencapai kriteria kelulusan minimal yaitu 75. Kedua, penelitian ini dinilai sukses jika 75% dari siswa memberikan respon positif terhadap penggunaan English Talking Book sebagai media pembelajaran. Penelitian ini telah selesai dilaksanakan oleh peneliti dan para siswa. Pada penelitian ini, peneliti mencoba untuk menggabungkan penggunaan English Talking Book sebagai media pembelajaran dan PQRST sebagai teknik. Terdapat beberapa langkah pada penelitian ini yang berguna untuk meningkatkan kemampuan siswa untuk memahami bacaan. Langkah yang pertama, peneliti memainkan English Talking Book satu kali dan menginstruksikan pada para siswa untuk memperhatikan (preview). Ketika sedang menonton, para siswa diinstruksikan untuk membuat 5 pertanyaan dengan menggunakan 5W+1H mengenai sesuatu yang mereka ingin ketahui dari cerita tersebut (question). Lalu peneliti memberikan English Talking Book dalam bentuk hand out dan memainkan English Talking Book satu kali lagi (read). Selama menonton, para siswa diminta untuk menjawab pertanyaan yang telah mereka buat sebelumnya. Setelah itu, para siswa diminta untuk membuat ringkasan dari cerita dalam bentuk mind map (summary). Dan langkah terakhir, para siswa diminta untuk mengerjakan soal yang diberikan dengan tujuan untuk mengetahui kemampuan mereka dalam memahami bacaan (test).
English Abstract
This study was intended to improve the reading comprehension of the eighth graders of SMPN 13 Malang through the use of English Talking Book as the instructional media in the teaching reading of narrative text. Based on the preliminary study done by the researcher in 8C class, 58% or 19 out of 33 students failed to reach the minimum passing grade in the reading narrative test. The minimum grade was 75. There were only 14 students who passed the minimum grade. To overcome the problem, the English Talking Book was implemented. This study was Classroom Action Research. There were several instruments required to collect the data. The instruments were interview guide, observation checklist, field notes, the students’ test and the students’ questionnaire. The students’ score were obtained from the reading test, while the students’ response towards English Talking Book was obtained from the observation checklist, the field notes and the questionnaire. There were two criteria of success in this study. First, this study was considered successful if 75% of the students passed the minimum passing grade of 75. Second, this study was considered successful if 75% of the students showed positive response toward English Talking Book as the instructional media. The implementation of this study was done by the researcher and the students. In this study, the researcher tried to combine English Talking Book as the instructional media and PQRST as the technique. There were some steps in this study which are beneficial to improve the students’ reading comprehension. For the first step, the researcher played English Talking Book once and gave instruction to the students to watch it carefully (preview). While watching, the students were asked to make 5 questions using 5W+1H about something that they wanted to know from the story (question). Then, the researcher gave English Talking Book in printed out version and played the media once again (read). While watching, the students had to answer the question they had already made. After that, the students were asked to summarize the story in the form of mind map (summary). And the last step, the students were asked to do a test given in order to know their reading comprehension (test). The study was conducted in two cycles and each cycle consisted of four meetings. In Cycle I, 62% or 21 students out of 34 students passed the minimum passing grade. Since the first cycle was failed, the second cycle was conducted to viii improve the first cycle. In Cycle II, 85% or 29 students out of 34 students passed the minimum passing grade. The result of the questionnaire also showed that 89% of the students give positive response towards English Talking Book as the instructional media. Therefore, since this study met the first and the second criteria of success, it can be concluded that the media was successful to improve the reading comprehension of 8 graders of SMPN 13 Malang. Regarding to the teaching reading by the use of English Talking Book as the instructional media, the researcher gave some suggestions for those who are closely related to teaching. First, the English teacher is suggested to choose an effective teaching technique and also a good media to attract the students’ attention. Second, the students are suggested to use English Talking Book as the media in reading process because it is proven as an effective media to improve students’ reading comprehension. Finally, the further researchers are suggested to conduct a research related to this study to improve the other English skills.
