Abstract
Menguasai bahasa Inggris sangat diperlukan mengingat bahwa bahasa Inggris adalah bahasa internasional. Selain itu, berbicara dalam bahasa Inggris dengan lancar juga diperlukan untuk siswa di Indonesia agar dapat berkomunikasi dengan orang lain dari negara lain demi memperkaya pengetahuan. Ada beberapa masalah yang berkaitan dengan kemampuan berbicara yang dihadapi oleh siswa non English speaking country. Beberapa siswa mengalami masalah dalam menuangkan ide yang mereka miliki. Domain juga merupakan salah satu masalah yang dihadapi oleh siswa. Kurangnya kosakata dan kurang kepercayaan diri juga merupakan masalah yang dihadapi oleh siswa di non English speaking country. Berdasarkan penelitian terdahulu yang dilaksanakan di SMA N 3 Bangkalan, beberapa masalah masih ditemukan terkait kemampuan bebicara siswa dalam bahasa Inggris. Terkait dengan permasalahan tersebut, peneliti mengusulkan story telling technique with picture series untuk meningkatkan kemampuan berbicara siswa. Rumusan masalah dari penelitian ini adalah adalah “How can story telling technique with picture series can enhance students’ speaking achievement during the implementation of story telling technique with picture series in SMA N 3 Bangkalan”.dan “How can story telling technique with picture series improve students’ active participation during the implementation of story telling technique with picture series in SMA N 3 Bangkalan?” Dengan menggunakan penelitian tindakan kelas, peneliti menerapkan story telling technique with picture series untuk memecahkan masalah siswa dalam ketrampilan berbicara. Penelitian ini dilakukan dalam satu siklus yang terdiri dari empat pertemuan. Penelitian ini fokus pada keaktifan siswa selama proses pembelajaran dan keaktifan siswa selama selama diskusi kelompok. Penelitian ini juga fokus pada pencapaian ketrampilan berbicara siswa. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa ada peningkatan yang signifikan dalam kemampuan berbicara siswa setelah story telling technique with picture series diterapkan. Dari dua kriteria keberhasilan yang telah ditetapkan yakni 80% siswa aktif selama proses pembelajaran dan diskusi kelompok belajar dan semua siswa mencapai nilai KKM (75), semua kriteria tersebut telah dicapai. Ini dibuktikan dengan data bahwa 82% dari siswa aktif dan sangat aktif selama proses pembelajaran dan 88% siswa aktif atau bahkan sangat aktif selama diskusi kelompok. Dengan demikian, kriteria pertama tercapai. Kriteria keberhsilan yang x kedua juga dicapai. 100% siswa lulus nilai standar minimal. Ada juga peningkatan nilai rata-rata siswa. Sebelum story telling technique with picture series diterapkan, nilai rata-rata siswa adalah 78.060. Sedangkan nilai rata-rata setelah story telling technique with picture series diterapkan meningkat menjadi 82.484. Dengan demikian, dapat disimpulkan bahwa story telling technique with picture series berhasil meningkatkan kemampuan berbicara dan meningkatkan keaktifan siswa.. Story telling technique with picture series dianjurkan untuk dijadikan salah referensi alternatif dalam pelajaran bahasa Inggris khususnya pada kemampuan berbicara untuk memotivasi dan meningkatkan kemampuan berbicara siswa.
English Abstract
Mastering English is necessary since English is considered as international language. In addition, speaking English fluently is required for students in Indonesia in order to be able to communicate with other people from other countries for the sake of enriching students’ knowledge and enhancing students’ self development. There are some problems related to speaking ability faced by non English speakers. Some of students whose first and second language are not English are having problem to generate idea. Domain or topic bounded might be one of the reasons why the problems exist. Lack of vocabulary and lack of confidence are also problems faced by students in non English speaking country. Based on the preliminary study in SMA N 3 Bangkalan, some problems were still found on the students’ ability in English, especially in speaking. Related to those phenomena, the researcher proposed a teaching technique named story telling technique with picture series to enhance students’ speaking ability. The problems of research that are investigated through this research are “How can story telling technique with picture series enhance students’ speaking achievement during the implementation of story telling technique with picture series in SMA N 3 Bangkalan?” and “How can story telling technique with picture series improve students’ active participation during the implementation of story telling technique with picture series in SMA N 3 Bangkalan?” By using classroom action research design, the researcher implemented story telling technique with picture series to solve the students’ problem in speaking skill. This research was conducted in one cycle that consists of four meetings. This research also focused on students’ active participation during learning process and during group discussion and on students’ speaking achievement. Briefly, the result of the research showed that there is a significant improvement of students’ speaking skill after the implementation of story telling technique with picture series. From two criteria of success that have been set which are 80% of students were active during learning process and group discussion and all students reach minimum standard score (75), all of those criteria were accomplished. There was significant improvement on students’ active participation during learning process and during group discussion. It was found at the end of cycle that 82% of students were active and very active during viii learning process and 88% of students were active or even very active during group discussion. Thus, the first criterion is achieved. The second achievement criterion can be seen from the result of speaking test. It was found that 100% of the students passed minimum standard score. There was also improvement on students’ mean score. Before applying the story telling technique with picture series, students’ mean score was 78.060. It was improved after the story telling technique with picture series was applied. The mean score improved into 82.484. Thus, it could be concluded that story telling technique with picture series successfully improves students’ speaking ability and students’ active participation. Story telling technique with picture series is recommended to be used as alternative reference in creating English speaking classes to motivate and enhance students’ speaking performance. Story telling technique with picture series is also applicable to be applied on all levels of proficiency.
