Abstract
Sastra pada abad ke-21 merupakan bagian dari pengembangan masyarakat yang semakin modern. Novel merupakan salah satu produk karya sastra. Novel dapat didefinisikan sebagai karya sastra yang kompleks karena memiliki banyak metode untuk menyampaikan cerita, misalnya adalah arus kesadaran. Arus kesadaran adalah metode narasi yang menggambarkan pemikiran di dalam pikiran atau perasaan karakter. Salah satu penulis yang menggunakan arus kesadaran dalam karyanya adalah Naguib Mahfouz dalam novelnya yang berjudul "The Thief and The Dogs". "The Thief and The Dogs" menggambarkan fenomena sosial yang terjadi di Mesir setelah revolusi. Said Mahran adalah tokoh utama dalam novel, dia mengalami pengalaman tentang penghianatan yang dipicu oleh orang-orang terdekatnya seperti yang tercermin dalam persepsinya. Dalam hal ini, pendekatan phenomenologi digunakan untuk menganalisa pengalaman tentang penghianatan. Karena pendekatan ini dapat membantu dalam menemukan makna dari pengalaman Said Mahran. Penulis menemukan bahwa pengalaman Said Mahran mempengaruhi persepsinya tentang penghianatan. Pengalaman ini membuat Said mahran ingin balas dendam terhadap orang-orang yang telah menghianatinya, dalam hal ini mereka adalah Nabawiyya, Ilish Sidra, dan Rauf Ilwan. Said berusaha balas dendam intuk mendapatkan keadilan. Dalam penelitian yang menggunakan pendekatan phenomenologi ini ditemukan bahwa pengalaman tentang penghianatan bisa mempengaruhi persepsi seseorang. Karena akan sangat menarik ketika melihat latar belakang penulis novel yaitu Naguib Mahfouz. Dengan menggunakan pendekatan ini mungkin akan lebih dipahami bagaimana masing-masing karakter terbentuk dari latar belakang penulis.
English Abstract
Literature in 21st century is part of development of an increasingly modern society. Novel is one product of literary work. Novel can be defined as complex literary work because it has many ways to tell the story for example, is stream of consciousness. Stream of consciousness is a method of narration that describes in words the flow of thoughts in the minds of the characters. The one of writer who uses stream of consciousness in his work is Naguib Mahfouz in his novel entitled “The Thief and The Dogs”. “The Thief and The Dogs” describes social phenomenon that happens in Egypt after revolution. Said Mahran, the main character in the novel, has experienced betrayal committed by persons closed to him as reflected in his perceptions. In this case, phenomenology approach is used to analyze Said Mahran’s experiences of betrayal. Since this approach can help to find the essences of Said Mahran’s experiences. The writer found that Said Mahran’s experiences influence his perception on betrayal. This experience makes Said wants to take revenge against those people who have betrayed him, in this case they are Nabawiyya, Ilish Sidra, and Rauf Ilwan. Said look revenge by killing them to look justice. In this thesis which used phenomenological approach, found that experience of betrayal can influence someone perceptions. It is very interesting if the next researcher uses biographical approach to analyze this novel. Since, it will be very interesting when looking at the background of the author of the novel, Naguib Mahfouz. By using this approach may be better understood how each character is formed connected with the writer’s background.
