Abstract

English Abstract

Nowadays, people are getting familiar with humor that presents in television show and mass media as if it cannot be separated from them. One of the shows is The Comment on Net TV which has oral verbal humor as its content. The presenters of the show make use of twisting linguistic ambiguity to amuse the audience. Therefore, this research focuses on solving three research problems: first to find out types of linguistic ambiguity found in The Comment, to find out the frequency of the occurrence of each type, and to find out the probable reason why certain types are choosen to be applied than others. This study used theory of phonological ambiguity (Shultz and Pilon, 1973), lexical ambiguity (Hurford and Heaseley, 2007), structural ambiguity (Hurford and Heaseley, 2007), and pragmatic ambiguity (Walton, 1996) to analyze the data. The research analyzed 91 utterances in total collected from The Comment episodes which were taken from its official account in youtube.com. The data were collected through downloading the videos of The Comment show, watching the videos, and transcribing the verbal humor utterances. Then, the types of twisting linguistic ambiguity, the frequency of each type found, and probable reasons behind the different frequencies were identified. The results of the analysis show that there were four types of twisting linguistic ambiguity in the presenters’ oral verbal humor. They were twisting phonological ambiguity, twisting lexical ambiguity, twisting pragmatic ambiguity, and twisting structural ambiguity. Pragmatic ambiguity occurred most frequently (38.5 %) since it involved the violation of Cooperative Principle by Grice. The second place was phonological ambiguity which involved the manipulations of the smallest linguistic units, like sounds and junctures (36.3%). Then it was followed by lexical ambiguity (24.1%) which involved verbal manipulations in the lexical level. The last type was structural ambiguity which was related to structure of the sentence (1.1%). In conclusion, pragmatic ambiguity was choosen mostly to be applied by the presenters to create funny stimulus, while structural was least to be considered. As a suggestion, future researchers could consider to conduct their study on other comedians or other shows’ verbal humor whether it is produced in Javanese, Bahasa Indonesia, English or any other languages that they master on to seek linguistic ambiguity within.
