Abstract
Dalam mempelajari bahasa Inggris, ada empat kompetensi yang harus dikuasai, yaitu mendengarkan, berbicara, membaca, dan menulis. Selain itu, siswa juga harus belajar komponen bahasa lainnya. Salah satu komponen bahasa adalah tata bahasa. Tata bahasa adalah struktur bahasa untuk membantu kita membuat kalimat. Studi awal yang dilakukan di SMP Negeri 11 Malang menunjukkan bahwa sebagian besar siswa kelas VIII-E masih menghadapi kesulitan dalam menggunakan simple past tense. Beberapa siswa bingung dalam mengubah kata sederhana menjadi kata lampau dikarenakan simple past mempunyai aturan perubahan bentuk kata. Untuk mengatasi masalah dalam penguasaan simple past tense, peneliti menggunakan permainan tic-tac-toe sebagai teknik pembelajaran. Studi ini menggunakan penelitian tindakan kelas. Berdasarkan Kemmis & Mc Taggart (2000), studi ini dilakukan dalam satu siklus dimana terdiri dari tiga pertemuan. Dalam satu siklus terdapat empat tahap, yaitu perencanaan, tindakan, mengamati, dan refleksi. Sebelum memulai studi, peneliti melakukan studi awal untuk mengetahui kesulitan siswa pada past tense. Selama melakukan studi ini, peneliti bertindak sebagai guru yang menerapkan permainan tic-tac-toe dalam proses pembelajaran dan dibantu guru bahasa Inggris yang berperan sebagai pengamat. Dalam mengumpulkan data, ada beberapa instrumen yang digunakan peneliti yaitu lembar observasi, catatan lapang, angket, wawancara, dan tes . Hasil studi ini mengungkapkan bahwa tic-tac-toe dapat meningkatkan pemahaman siswa pada simple past tense. Hal tersebut dapat dilihat dari nilai siswa yang telah memenuhi kriteria keberhasilan dari studi ini. Pertama, 75% siswa berhasil lulus KKM yaitu (≥75). Temuan ini menunjukkan bahwa persentase siswa yang lulus KKM di pre-test adalah 57.14 % dan persentase post- tes 83 % dan skor dari rata-rata siswa di pre -test adalah 73.21 dan meningkat menjadi 77 dalam post-test. Kedua, 75 % siswa aktif terlibat dalam proses belajar mengajar. Keterlibatan siswa meningkat dari 65 % menjadi 83.3 % selama proses pembelajaran. Dari hasil studi ini, peneliti dapat menyimpulkan bahwa mengajar dengan menggunakan tic-tac-toe di kelas VIII-E, SMPN 11 Malang dapat meningkatkan penguasaan mereka pada simple past tense. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian ini, sebagai saran untuk guru harus kreatif membantu para siswa untuk meningkatkan kemampuan bahasa Inggris mereka dengan menggunakan metode yang menarik. Sebagai saran untuk siswa, mereka harus mencoba untuk menghafal perubahan kata kerja. Untuk peneliti selanjutnya, mereka dapat melakukan penelitian yang sama dengan tenses atau kompetensi yang berbeda
English Abstract
In learning English, there are four skills that should be mastered, namely listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Besides learning the four skills, students should learn the language components. One of language components is grammar. Grammar is a structure language to help us to make sentences. In preliminary study that conducted at SMP Negeri 11 Malang, mostly VIII-E students still face difficulties in using the simple past tense. Some of the students are confused to change infinitive verb into past simple, since it also has the rule of the changing of verb. To overcome the problem in mastering grammar especially simple past tense, the researcher uses tic-tac-toe game as a technique in learning process. This research used a classroom action research design. According to Kemmis & Mc Taggart (2000) this research was conducted in one cycle which consisted of three meetings. A cycle consisted of four stages which are planning, action, observing, and reflection. During the study, the researcher acted as a teacher who implemented the tic-tac-toe game in the teaching and learning process and the English teacher acted as the observer. In collecting the data, there were some instruments that researcher used. They were observation checklist, field notes, questionnaire, interview guide, and grammar test. The result of this research revealed that tic-tac-toe game can improve students’ achievement on simple past tense. It was dealing with the fulfillment of the criteria of success which had been set by the researcher. First, 75% students passed (≥ 75) as the standard minimum score (KKM).The finding showed that the class percentage which passed the KKM in pre-test is 57.14% and percentage in post-test is 83% and students’ mean score in pre-test was 73.21 and it increased became 77 in the post-test. Second, 75% of the students actively involved in the teaching and learning process. The students’ involvement improved from 65% to 83.3% actively during the learning process. From this result, the researcher concludes that teaching simple past tense by using tic-tac-toe game for eight grades of SMPN 11 Malang can improve their achievement on simple past tense. Based on the result of this research, as the suggestion for the teacher, she must be creative to help the students to improve their English skill by using interesting method of teaching in order to make students’ interest, activeness and enthusiastism in learning process, for the students it is suggested that the students should use their dictionary often and try to memorize the changing of verb on simple past tense and for further researchers, they can conduct similar research in other tenses and skills
