Pratama, DianPutri (2015) Translation Adjustment in the Novel “Abarat” by Clive Barker. Sarjana thesis, Universitas Brawijaya.
Abstract
Translation is generally defined as the way to transfer meaning from source language into the target language. A translator needs to make sure that his translation carries the equivalent semantic meaning and message load to the source language text. To produce a good translation, adjustments are needed since translation is dealing with two different languages, both in terms of cultural and grammatical aspects. In this study, the writer identified the adjustment techniques used by the translator in a novel entitled Abarat and the possible reason behind it. There are two problems of the study, they are: (1) What are the technique of adjustments used in Clive Barker’s Novel Entitled Abarat; (2) What are the possible reasons for the translator of Abarat to do the adjustment techniques. The study used qualitative approach. The data source was a novel targeted for young-adults entitled ‘Abarat’ written by Clive Barker. The data of this study were all the sentences undergoing adjustments. To analyse the data, the writer employed the theory of translation adjustment technique by Nida (1964). The results of this study reveal that the most used adjustment technique is addition, followed by alteration and subtraction consecutively. The addition is mostly used when the translator dealing with elliptical sentence, sentence that needs to be restructured grammatically, and also to make an explicit message in the source language to be more implicit for the target readers. Meanwhile for the possible reason of the adjustment done by the translator, the writer founds that those reasons are related to structure, style, semantic, and communication. The conclusion of this study is almost all of the adjustments are found in this novel, except for the sub-category ‘answers to rethorical questions’ and vocatives. The most frequently used adjustment is addition (52.7%), the second frequently used adjustment is alteration (34.8%), and subtraction is the last (12.4%). This study shows that the possible reason for the translator of Abarat to do the adjustment techniques are related to structure, semantic, communication and style of the writer. For the next researchers, it is suggested to limit their data to avoid excessive data which may later result taking much time to complete the study. The limitation can be done by taking only utterances done by the main characters, the narrator, or utterances in climax.
