Abstract
Membaca adalah salah satu keterampilan bahasa penting yang harus dikuasai oleh siswa terutama di SMA Negeri 1 Cerme, Gresik dalam pembelajaran bahasa Inggris. Proses membaca menebak dan memahami ide-ide dan menerima pesan dari teks membaca yang dibaca. Setelah membaca, pembaca harus memahami pesan penulis atau informasi penting yang dinyatakan dalam teks apakah informasi spesifik atau informasi umum. Berdasarkan wawancara informal dengan guru kelas sepuluh Bahasa Inggris SMA Negeri 1 Cerme, Gresik, para siswa mengalami kesulitan dalam belajar bahasa Inggris, terutama dalam pemahaman membaca. Beberapa siswa kurang termotivasi untuk belajar bahasa Inggris dan mereka tidak tertarik membaca karena mereka lebih sedikit tata bahasa dan kosakata. Beberapa siswa lain bahkan tidak memberi perhatian selama proses belajar mengajar terutama dalam mengajar pemahaman membaca. Ini terjadi karena teknik atau metode yang digunakan oleh guru bahasa Inggris terlalu monoton. Refleksi awal menunjukkan bahwa sebagian besar siswa di sekolah menengah atas memiliki masalah dalam pemahaman membaca. Para siswa merasa sulit untuk menemukan informasi umum, informasi spesifik, makna tekstual, dan referensi tekstual. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui apakah implementasi strategi SQ3R dapat meningkatkan pemahaman membaca siswa kelas sepuluh dan apa masalah siswa sementara strategi SQ3R berlaku SMA Negeri 1 Cerme, Gresik pada tahun akademik 2014/2015. Oleh karena itu, untuk mencapai tujuan, peneliti melakukan desain penelitian tindakan kelas. Penelitian ini dilakukan dalam dua siklus di mana setiap siklus memiliki 2 pertemuan. Data dianalisis dengan membandingkan hasil pre-test dan post-test. Analisis pasca-tes terakhir pada siklus II menunjukkan bahwa merupakan peningkatan yang signifikan dari pre-test hingga post-test. Dalam pre-test, pass siswa adalah 7,89% dari semua siswa. Ada 3 siswa yang mencapai nilai kelulusan minimum. Dalam post-test I yang 26,31% dengan skor maksimum 78 hanya 10 siswa yang mencapai nilai kelulusan minimum. Data analisis menunjukkan bahwa skor siswa dalam post-test terakhir Cycle II adalah 97,36% semua siswa mencapai nilai kelulusan minimum. Penelitian ini selanjutnya menunjukkan bahwa sebagian besar subjek memberikan respons positif bahwa strategi SQ3R berhasil diterapkan dalam meningkatkan pemahaman membaca subyek. Kesimpulannya, menggunakan metode SQ3R memiliki pengaruh signifikan pada pencapaian pemahaman membaca. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian, untuk guru bahasa Inggris disarankan untuk menggunakan metode SQ3R sebagai metode pengajaran alternatif dalam mengajar bahasa Inggris terutama mengajar pemahaman membaca.
English Abstract
Reading is one of essential language skills that should be mastered by students especially at SMA Negeri 1 Cerme, Gresik in English language learning. The process of Reading is guessing and understanding the ideas and receiving the message from the reading text being read. After reading, the reader should understand the writer’s message or important information stated in the text whether specific information or general information. Based on the informal interview with the ten grade English teacher of SMA Negeri 1 Cerme, Gresik, the students experienced difficulties in learning English, especially in reading comprehension. Some students were less motivated to learn English and they were not interested in reading because they less grammar and vocabulary. Some other students even gave no attention during the teaching learning process especially in teaching reading comprehension. This happened because the technique or method used by the English teacher was too monotonous. The initial reflection showed that most of the students in senior high school had problems in reading comprehension. The students felt difficult to find general information, specific information, textual meaning, and textual reference. The objective of the present study was to figure out whether or not the implementation of SQ3R strategy can improve reading comprehension of the tenth grade students and what students problem while SQ3R strategy apply of SMA Negeri 1 Cerme, Gresik in academic year 2014/2015. Therefore, to achieve the objective, the researcher conducted a classroom action research design. This research was conducted in two cycles where each cycle had 2 meetings. The data were analyzed by comparing the result of pre-test and post-test. The analysis of the last post-test in cycle II showed that was significant improvement from the pre-test to post-test. In pre-test, the students’ pass was 7.89 % from all students; there was 3 students’ who achieved the minimum passing grade. In post-test I which was 26.31 % with maximum score 78 only 10 students’ achieved the minimum passing grade. The analysis data showed that the students’ score in the last post-test of cycle II was 97.36 % all of the students’ achieved the minimum passing grade. This research furthermore showed that most of the subjects gave positive response that SQ3R strategy was successfully applied in improving the subjects’ reading comprehension. In conclusion, using SQ3R method has a significant effect on reading comprehension achievement. Based on the result of the research, for the English teacher is recommended to use SQ3R method as an alternative teaching method in teaching English especially teaching reading comprehension.
