Abstract
Pekerjaan sastra adalah reproduksi pikiran penulis. Selama proses kreatif, penulis sering membuat karakter yang memiliki kondisi psikologis yang kompleks untuk menggambarkan apa pun yang berkaitan dengan pengalaman batin individu, pikiran, perasaan dan emosi. Salah satu karya fiksi yang menggambarkan dengan kuat kondisi psikologis seorang pria adalah kehidupan rahasia Walter Mitty. Masalah utama dari penelitian ini adalah bagaimana kehidupan rahasia Walter Mitty memotret kondisi psikologis karakter utama dalam mengatasi kecemasannya. Penelitian ini berfokus pada karakter utama, yaitu Walter Mitty. Penelitian ini menggunakan psikoanalisis untuk memahami kepribadian karakter utama. Dalam penelitian ini, penulis menggunakan dua sumber data. Data primer diambil dari cerita pendek kehidupan rahasia Walter Mitty sendiri, data dalam bentuk kata-kata yang diucapkan oleh karakter utama dari cerita dan elemen-elemen sastra yang terkandung dalam cerita pendek itu sendiri. Sementara itu sumber data sekunder adalah buku-buku sastra dan psikologi yang terkait dengan penelitian ini. Berdasarkan analisis, penelitian ini menemukan bahwa masalah karakter utama yang disebabkan oleh kondisi mentalnya. Karakter utama memiliki masalah kecemasan serius yang memengaruhi dia untuk melakukan beberapa cara untuk mengatasinya. Dia menggunakan beberapa mekanisme pertahanan ego untuk mengatasi kecemasan. Cara-caranya untuk mengatasi kecemasan membuatnya terjebak di dunia fiksinya dan tidak dapat menangani dunia nyata. Penulis menyarankan para peneliti berikutnya untuk menggunakan eksistensialisme atau pendekatan sosiologis sejak cerita pendek ditulis selama awal Perang Dunia II.
English Abstract
Literary work is a reproduction of the author’s mind. During a creative process, authors often create a character which has a complex psychological state to describe anything which deals with individuals inner experiences, thoughts, feelings and emotions. One of fictional works which depicts strongly the psychological condition of a man is The Secret Life of Walter Mitty. The major problem of this study is how the The Secret Life of Walter Mitty portraits the psychological condition of the main character in coping with his anxiety. This study focused on the major character, namely Walter Mitty. This study used Psychoanalysis to understand the personality of the main character. In this study, the writer used two data sources. The primary data were taken from the short story The Secret Life of Walter Mitty itself, the data were in form of words spoken by the main character of the story and any literary elements contained in the short story itself. Meanwhile the secondary data sources were any books of literature and psychology related to this study. Based on the analysis, this study found that the problem of main character caused by his mental condition. The main character have a serious anxiety problem which influenced him to did some ways to cope with them. He used some ego defense mechanism to overcome the anxiety. His ways to overcome the anxiety made him trapped in his fictional world and could not handle his real world. The writer suggests the next researchers to use either Existentialism or Sociological approach since the short story was written during the begining of the World War II.
