Abstract

Saat ini, Bahasa Inggris di Indonesia diajarkan sebagai bahasa asing, dan itu berkaitan dengan bidang pendidikan, terutama di sekolah menengah. Selain itu, menguasai bahasa Inggris itu penting, terutama dalam keterampilan berbicara. Itu karena memasuki era globalisasi, para siswa harus dapat melakukan komunikasi dengan baik .. Namun, di Indonesia ada peluang terbatas bagi siswa untuk memiliki aktivitas berbicara dalam bahasa Inggris secara mendalam di kelas biasa. Berdasarkan situasi ini, banyak sekolah, termasuk SMAN 1 Srengat Blitar menyediakan program ekstrakurikuler Inggris untuk meningkatkan kemampuan siswa untuk berbicara bahasa Inggris. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menggambarkan program ekstrakurikuler Inggris di SMAN 1 Srengat Blitar. Secara khusus, ada tiga komponen yang dijelaskan dalam penelitian ini. Kegiatan yang dilakukan oleh guru dalam program ekstrakurikuler, kesulitan siswa dalam kegiatan berbicara, dan pendapat siswa tentang program ekstrakurikuler. Penelitian ini menggunakan desain deskriptif-kualitatif. Subjek penelitian ini adalah guru program ekstrakurikuler Inggris dan 105 siswa dari program itu. 25 siswa kelas XI IPA, 27 siswa kelas XI IPS 4, 27 siswa XI IPS 1, dan 26 siswa XI IPS 3. Peneliti menggunakan beberapa instrumen. Panduan wawancara, kuesioner, dokumentasi, dan catatan lapangan. Data yang diperoleh dianalisis dengan menggunakan teknik analisis data berdasarkan Miles dan Huberman (1994). Berdasarkan temuan penelitian, peneliti menemukan bahwa hasil dari masalah penelitian adalah: 1). Ada beberapa kegiatan berbicara yang dilakukan oleh guru dalam program ekstrakurikuler Inggris, mereka bertindak dari skrip, simulasi dan permainan peran, bercerita, pertanyaan jawaban, dan pengeboran. 2). Ada beberapa masalah siswa dalam mengikuti kegiatan berbicara seperti mereka tidak ingin aktif, dan mereka malu untuk mengekspresikan ide-ide mereka, dan mereka tidak memiliki kosakata yang cukup untuk berbicara bahasa Inggris dan cenderung menggunakan bahasa ibu mereka. 3). Sebagian besar siswa memberikan respons positif terhadap program ekstrakurikuler Inggris di SMAN 1 Srengat Blitar. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian ini, peneliti menyarankan kepada guru program untuk menggunakan kegiatan yang lebih menarik untuk menarik siswa untuk berpartisipasi dalam kegiatan berbicara. Selain itu, sekolah harus mempertimbangkan kembali tentang tempat dan waktu untuk melakukan program ini untuk menghindari kebosanan dan kelelahan siswa. Selanjutnya, untuk peneliti lebih lanjut, mereka dapat membuat penelitian serupa tentang program ekstrakurikuler, tetapi mereka dapat membedakannya dalam fokus mereka, seperti bahan, atau media yang digunakan dalam proses pengajaran.

English Abstract

Nowadays, English in Indonesia is taught as a foreign language, and it is concerned with education field, especially in high school. Besides, mastering English is important, especially in speaking skill. It is because to enter the globalization era, the students have to be able to conduct communication well.. However, in Indonesia there is limited chance for student to have speaking activity in English deeply in the regular class. Based on this situation, many schools, including SMAN 1 Srengat Blitar provides an English extracurricular program to increase students’ ability to speak English. This research is aimed to describe the English Extracurricular Program at SMAN 1 Srengat Blitar. Specifically, there were three components described in this research; the activities conducted by the teacher in the extracurricular program, students’ difficulty in speaking activity, and students’ opinion about the extracurricular program. This research used descriptive-qualitative design. The subject of this research were a teacher of English extracurricular program and 105 students of that program; 25 students of class XI IPA, 27 students of class XI IPS 4, 27 students of XI IPS 1, and 26 students of XI IPS 3. The researcher used some instruments; interview guide, questionnaire, documentation, and field notes. The data obtained were analyzed by using the technique of data analysis by Miles and Huberman (1994). Based on the findings of the study, the researcher found that the result of the research problems are: 1). There were some speaking activities conducted by the teacher in the English extracurricular program, they were acting from a script, simulation and role play, storytelling, questions answers, and drilling. 2). There were some students’ problems in following speaking activities such as they did not want to be active, and they were shy to express their ideas, and they had no enough vocabulary to speak English and tended to use their mother tongue. 3). Most of the students gave positive response towards English extracurricular program at SMAN 1 Srengat Blitar. Based on the result of this research, the researcher suggests to the teacher of the program to use more interesting activities to attract students to participate in speaking activities. Moreover, the school has to reconsider about the place and time to conduct this program to avoid students’ boredom and tiredness. Next, for further researchers, they can make the similar research about the extracurricular program, but they can differentiate it in their focus, such as material, or media used in the teaching process.
