Abstract

Second language acquisition is the process of learning other languages in addition to the native language. One of the most important things in acquiring language is motivation. In this case, the writer is interested in motivation that is used by 1st year students at Senior High School Cendekia Sidoarjo. This study uses Gardner theory (1972) to investigate the degree of both integrative and instrumental motivation found in the 1st year students at Senior High School Cendekia Sidoarjo. The problems in this study, they are; (1) How are the 1st year students at Senior High School Cendekia Sidoarjo Instrumentally or Integratively motivated towards learning English? and (2) What type of motivation in learning English is more dominant in the 1st year students at Senior High School Cendekia? This study uses quantitative approach since the writer analyzed the result of the questionnaire. In addition, case study was applied because the participants are under one institution, that is Senior High School Cendekia Sidoarjo. There are 58 students that were involved in this study. This study reveals that each participant has integrative and instrumental motivation. The participants who have integrative motivation with the mean of 3,79 are students who learn English as their hobbies. Meanwhile, the participants who have instrumental motivation with the mean of 3,91 are students who learn English with purpose. Overal, the dominant type of motivation by the 1st year students at Senior High School Cendekia Sidoarjo is instrumental motivation. From the analysis the writer concludes that the both of motivation types are used by the 1st year students at Senior High School Cendekia Sidoarjo, but the dominant is instrumental motivation. The writer suggests the next writer analyze type of motivation in other levels of education, different theory and models of motivation.
