Abstract

Writing is one of the four skills that must be learnt by the students. Based on the Kurikulum Tingkat Satuan Pendidikan (KTSP) suggested by the government, students of Junior High School must learn some text types, one of the texts is recount text. Unfortunately, eight graders (VIII-C) of MTs. Surya Buana Malang in academic year 2014/ 2015 got the problem in writing recount text, such as what had been reported by the teacher in the preliminary study. Therefore, this study is worth to be conducted to overcome that problem and improve students’ writing achievement of recount text by introducing clustering technique as a solution (Langan, 2001). The design of this study was Classroom Action Research (CAR) based on Kember’s design which consists of planning, implementing, observing, and reflecting. It was done in one cycle which divided into three meetings. The data was collected through interview, questionnaire, field notes, and writing test. The result of the study showed that the implementations of clustering technique can improve students’ writing achievement in recount text. This was proven by the mean score of post-test (87.36) which was higher than the mean score of pre-test (61.4). In addition, the students also showed positive response toward the implementation of clustering technique. It can be seen from the result of questionnaire which showed that 96% of the students like using clustering technique. This study hopefully brings positive contribution, first for the teacher to make it as consideration for overcoming students’ difficulties in writing recount text since it provides solution and had been proven to overcome the problems which most of the students had. Second, for the students, they can apply the technique in writing other text types. Next, for the institution of MTs Surya Buana Malang, the stakeholder can suggest the other teachers to use clustering technique to increase students’ writing achievement. And the last for further researchers, hopefully it can be a reference if having the same topic to be observed and giving more examples about simple past tense.
