Abstract

Scientific approach is a method used by scientists in doing research. It becomes one of the characteristic in Curriculum 2013. This approach contains five steps to conduct teaching and learning activities for all subjects included English. This approach can lead the students to achieve the goals of learning. Nevertheless, scientific approach is a new thing for English language pedagogy and the sources of the implementation is also limited from module of seminars and workshops conducted by Ministry of Education. These make some teachers found difficulties in conducting scientific approach steps for English teaching and learning activity. Hence, the teachers need to know how to implement scientific approach steps and the strategy in order to have effective scientific learning. In addition, since it is new for English, the advantages and disadvantages of this approach should be exposed in order to avoid negative things in conducting this approach steps. In this study, the writer conducts research about the implementation of Scientific Approach steps for English teaching and learning activity based on Curriculum 2013 in SMAN 3 Malang Year 2014/2015. This study uses descriptive qualitative in describing scientific approach steps implementation for English, the strategies, the advantages and disadvantages of using scientific approach in English teaching and learning activity. The writer found that the goal of Scientific Approach is similar to Genre based Approach. Therefore, the teacher can apply five steps of scientific approach separately as the teacher’s modification and improvement. In addition, media and classroom management are the main point as the strategy in conducting scientific approach successfully. The writer also found that there is no disadvantage of this approach in the implementation. As the suggestion for the government, English teachers and further researcher, this study can be used as additional source in conducting scientific approach steps for English class. On the other hand, it is possible to expose more about how to make/use media to fulfill criteria of scientific approach for English subject.
