Isyawari, Anysa (2016) The Connotative Meaning of Emoticon Stickers Found In LINE Messenger: A Semiotic Analysis. Sarjana thesis, Universitas Brawijaya.
Abstract
Nowadays, people do not have to write letter and send it to post to give information. The development of technology makes people easier to communicate with other, for example by using social media such as messenger. LINE Messenger is one of the most popular application for communication. In LINE Messenger, there are emoticon stickers with many expressions to make the communication more interesting. The writer believes in every emoticon sticker there is meaning to be understood. It only takes four main characters in LINE Messenger to be analyzed in this study, which are Brown, Moon, Cony and James. There are two questions to be answered: (1) What are the signifiers and signifieds of Brown, Cony, Moon and James emoticon stickers found in LINE Messenger?; (2) What are the connotative meaning found in emoticon stickers of LINE Messenger?. The study uses qualitative approach by using document analysis technique. In this study, the writer needs 5 participants to collect the data. The data taken from each chatting conversation by the participants from 14th December – 20th December 2014. The writer collected the data to analyze the signifiers and signifieds found in each emoticon sticker. The writer also analyzed the connotative meaning by using psychology of color in describing emotions and meaning behind every emoticon sticker. The writer found 19 emoticon stickers used by all participants to be analyzed. The explanation from each participant through questionnaire and the theory of colors help much in describing the emotion and expression from emoticon stickers. In addition, all participants use the emoticon sticker in the same manner within the same context. The emoticon stickers represent the condition and express the feeling of each participant while sending the message and also the participant used it based on their personal emotion to express their feelings. The writer suggests that the next researchers conduct a study on semiotics by analyzing another emoticon sticker in LINE Messenger. The next researchers are also suggested that they use some other theories to gain better understanding about semiotics.
