Abstract

English Abstract

Address terms are terms that we use to address a person whom we speak to. Since there are many communities and cultures in this society, the address terms are also various. Communities can be found in many aspects of our society including in television shows. Television shows usually tell about certain group, how they live their life. The culture side of that particular society can also be reflected in the television for example through its language and in this particular occasion through its address terms. In order to address someone, there are some factors that have to be considered. Those factors such as age, sex, occupation influence the addressee and addresser to use certain terms. Thus this study was conducted to find out the majority of address terms and the factors that are influenced, among New Yorker society in How I Met Your Mother, based on Brown and Ford theory. This study used a qualitative approach to describe address terms as a phenomenon in the society. Furthermore this approach was used to analyze the conversation between minor and major characters to investigate the factors of address terms. The result of this study revealed that there were 67 address terms that the writer found from three episodes of How I Met Your Mother TV shows. The writer found 40 cases of First Name pattern as the most pattern that is used. Followed by Variant Form pattern that occurred in 19 cases. While the Title Last Name pattern occurred in 8 cases. In addition, there are several factors found such as age difference, occupation difference, sex difference, kinship and degree of intimacy. This study proves that American English has first name orientation in addressing people. For further research in address terms, it is suggested that the next writers who are interested to analyze this address terms phenomenon to use another theory.
