Abstract
Bahasa adalah bagian terpenting dalam berkomunikasi. Dalam berkomunikasi setiap orang harus mengikuti tata cara berkomunikasi yang disesuaikan dengan budaya dan norma yang berlaku dalam sebuah kelompok untuk menerima fungsi sosial yang disampaikan melalui komunikasi. Cara orang berkomunikasi tidak hanya memperhatikan struktur bahasa tetapi pemahaman tentang kultur sosial sangat diperlukan. Dalam aturan berkomunikasi, strategi kesantunan merupakan hal terpenting yang harus di tingkatkan. Kesantunan bertujuan untuk membuat hubungan dan komunikasi yang baik antara pembicara dan lawan bicara. Dalam studi ini, peneliti membahas tentang bagaiman seseorang merespon pujian berdasarkan perbedaan antara laki-laki dan perempuan. Ada dua masalah yang dipecahkan dalam studi ini, yaitu : (1) apa saja strategy kesantunan yang digunakan mahasiswa Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris dalam merespon pujian, (2) apa alasan mereka dalam merespon pujian. Penelitian ini menggunaka metode deskriptif kualitatif untuk mengumpulkan data, memproses data dan menganalisis data melalui pemahaman interaksi sosial. Peneliti mempertimbangkan beberapa hal dalam mengumpulkan data dengan menggunakan teknik purposive sample. Data diperoleh dari mahasiswa Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris semester melalui kuisioner dan wawancara berdasarkan 12 macam respon pujian oleh Robert K. Herbert (1986, 1989). Hasil dari penelitian ini adalah mahasiswa perempuan Pendidikan Bahsa Inggris cenderung menggunakan Aprreciation Total jumlah frekuensi 18 atau 36% dalam merespon pujian. Selanjutnya, Scale Down jumlah frekuensi 10 atau 20% , No Acknowledgment jumlah frekuensi 7 atau 14%, Comment History jumlah frekuensi 6 atau 12%, Return jumlah frekuensi 4 atau 8%, Dissagreement jumlah frekuensi 2 atau 4%, Comment Acceptance jumlah frekuensi 1 atau 2%, Qualification dan Request Interpretation jumlah frekuensi 1 atau 2%, kemudian jumlah frekuensi terendah adalah Question dan Reassignment dengan jumlah frekuensi 0 atau 0%. Sebaliknya , type merespon pujian yang sering digunakan oleh mahasiswa laki-laki Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris adalahAppreciation Token total frekuensi 22 atau 44%. Selanjutnya, Scale Down total frekuensi 12 atau 24%, No Acknowledgment total frekuensi 4 atau 8%, Comment History jumlah frekuensi 3 atau 6%, Dissagreement total frekuensi 3 atau 6%, Question jumlah frekuensi 2 atau 4%, Praise Upgrade dengan jumlah frekuensi 2 or 4%, Qualification dan Request Interpretation jumlah frekuensi 1 or 2%, jumlah frekuensi terendah adalah Comment Acceptance, Reassignment dan Return total frekuensi 0 or 0%. Ada beberapa alasan diungkapkan oleh laki-laki dan perempuan dalam merespon pujian. Jika perempuan mengatakan bahwa, mereka merespon pujian untuk membuat percakapan menarik dengan orang lain atau menambah keakraban, mereka tidak ingin terlihat sombong di hadapan orangorang dan juga mereka untuk menghormati pujian yang diberikan. Sementara itu, laki-laki memberikan alasan dalam merespon pujian untuk membangun rasa hormat dengan orang lain. Mereka juga mengatakan dalam merespon pujian mereka mencoba untuk menjaga hubungan dan tidak ingin terlihat sombong. Mereka juga mengungkapkan bahwa mereka terbiasa dengan pujian dan beberapa diantaranya tidak memberikan alasan dalam merespon pujian. Kesimpulan dari studi ini adalah mahasiswa Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris semester 8 lebih sering merespon pujian dengan mengucapkan “terima kasih” yang termasuk dalam jenis Appreciation Token, yang dimana strategi yang digunakan adalah kesantunan positive. Saran untuk mahasiswa Bahasa Inggris yaitu untuk lebih mempelajari tentang strategi kesantunan dan cara merespon pujian agar memahami makna yang disampaikan oleh orang-orang. Peneliti juga menyarankan untuk peneliti selanjutnya untuk membuat penelitian yang lebih baik tentang strategi kesantunan dan merespon pujian.
English Abstract
Language is the most important part of communication. In doing communication each people should follow a plan to communicate properly and the rules that must be delivered in accordance with the culture and norms within the cultural community in order to receive social function of any messages transmitted through communication. The way people speak is not only about the structure of language, but the understanding of socio cultural is also needed. In communication terms, politeness strategy is one of important aspect to be raised. Politeness is useful to create relationship and good communication in interaction between speaker and hearer. In this study, the researcher discuss about how the politeness of person to a compliment in a group of males and females. There are two problems to be solved in this study, namely : (1) what are the politeness strategy used by Students of English Education Department in responding compliment; (2) what are their reasons in responding compliment. This study used descriptive qualitative method to collect, process and analyze the data through an understanding of social interaction. The researcher consider a few things that will be considered in obtaining the data by using purposive sample technique. The data gained from students of English Education Department in 8th semester by using open-ended question and interview guide based on 12 types of Compliment Responses by Robert K. Herbert (1986, 1989) The result of this study reveals that females student of English Education Department tend to use Aprreciation Token in total frequency 18 or 36% in responding compliment. After that, Scale Down in total frequency 10 or 20% , No Acknowledgment in total frequency 7 or 14%, Common History in total frequency 6 or 12%, Return in total frequency 4 or 8%, Dissagreement in total frequency 2 or 4%, Comment Acceptance, Qualification and Request Interpretation total frequency 1 or 2%, then the lowest frequency are Praise Upgrade, Question and Reassignment in total frequency 0 or 0%. Meanwhile, the most common type that used by males in English Education department in responding compliment is Appreciation Token in total frequency 22 or 44%. Next, Scale Down in total frequency 12 or 24%, No Acknowledgment in total frequency 4 or 8%, Dissagreement in total frequency 3 or 6%, Comment History and Disagreement in total frequency 3 or 6%, Praise Upgrade in total frequency 2 or 4%, Qualification and Request Interpretation have total frequency 1 or 2%, then the lowest frequency are Comment Acceptance, Reassignment and Return in total frequency 0 or 0%. There are so many reason given by female and male participants in responding compliment. If female participants, responded the compliment to make good conversation with others or getting closer, they did not want to look arrogant in front of people and also to respect the compliment given. Meanwhile, male participants they gave a reason in responding compliment just to build respectability with others. They also said in responding compliment that they tried to keep relationship each other and not to look arrogant. They also said that they used to given comliment by someone and some of them did not give any reason in responding compliment. The conclussion of this study are students of English Education Department in 8th semester more likely to respond a compliment by just saying “thank you” that include in Appreciation Token, in which the strategy used is positive politeness. Suggestion for English students, they learn more about politeness strategy and how to responding compliment to make them understand the meaning of statement delivered by people. The reseracher also suggest for the next researcher to conduct the study more better about politeness strategy and respon the compliment.
