Anti, Andri (2015) A Comparative Study on Patterns of Reported Speech between Javanese and English. Sarjana thesis, Universitas Brawijaya.

Abstract

English Abstract

This study is conducted to find out the comparison of sentence structure between Javanese and English. The aim of this study is finding the differences and the similarities between those two languages’ reported speech patterns. The researcher used descriptive qualitative approach since the data deal with words. Five textbooks related to English reported speech patterns were used as the data in English, meanwhile the data in Javanese were two textbooks. This study reveals that there are more differences than the similarities between those two languages. There are eleven differences, namely: 1) reporting question; 2) reporting yes/no question; 3) tenses; 4) the adverb of time; 5) the adverb of place; 6) demonstrative adjective; 7) reporting suggestion; 8) modals; 9) the use of say and tell; 10) –ing clause; 11) to-infinitive. On the other hand, the researcher has found some similarities, namely: 1) English has four general reporting sentence patterns and so does Javanese; 2) reporting wh-question; 3) the entire quotation is in form of report sentence; 4) reporting negative sentence; 5) no quotation marks; 6) the changing of pronouns; 7) reporting order; 8) reporting prohibition. Since the differences of the patterns are more obvious than the similarities, it is predicted that Indonesian, especially Javanese learners of English will find some difficulties in learning reported speech.
