Speaking English skill is important, thus the students in Indonesia are targeted to be able to speak English. However, many students can not speak English fluently especially the eleventh graders of SMA Negeri 1 Bangkalan as the subject of this study who found it difficult to speak English. Some of the students are reluctant to speak English. This study focuses on the students’ intrinsic motivation to speak English. This study was aimed to find students’ intrinsic motivation and the factors that influence their intrinsic motivation by using the theory about intrinsic motivation by Anderman & Anderman (2010) and Lepper & Henderlong (2000). This study was a descriptive qualitative study. The subjects of this study were 36 students of XI-IPS 2 and an English teacher. The instruments used in this study were observation sheet, questionnaire, interview, and documentation. The findings of this study showed that some of the students were voluntary speak English to know their improvement in speaking. Most of the students agree that English is useful for them, but half of them were not enthusiastic in speaking. The students tended to be quiet because they were afraid in making mistake and lack of vocabulary. Based on the result of this study, the teacher is suggested to have a strategy to make the students more enthusiastic in speaking activity. The teacher should give an effective praise to the students. For the further researchers, they can add the time for observation so that the findings can be richer.
