Sa`diyah, Halimatus (2015) The Translation of English Implicit Organizational Meaning into Indonesian in Ender’s Game Novel. Sarjana thesis, Universitas Brawijaya.
Abstract
In a process of translation, meaning in the source text is something that needs to be delivered well in the target text. Since meaning can be stated implicitly, the translator needs to understand the meaning that was left implicit first, only then can deliver the meaning correctly without distorting the message intended by the witer/speaker. This study aims to investigate what form of implicit organizational meaning found in Ender’s Game novel and how the translator translates it into Indonesian, and what kind of explicitation found in the process of translating the implicit organizational meaning in Ender’s Game novel into Indonesian. Qualitative approach was used in conducting this study. This study used Ender’s (the main character in Ender’s Game novel) utterances that contained implicit organizational meaning as the data in this study. The data were analyzed using Larson’s (1998) theory of implicit meaning combined with Halliday and Hasan’s (1976) theory of substitution and ellipsis and Klaudy’s (1993, cited in Baker 2001 pp.82-83) theory of explicitation. The writer found 75 utterances contained implicit organizational meaning. 53 utterances contained ellipsis, 13 utterances contained substitution, and 9 utterances contained passive voice. 53 utterances were translated implicitly and 22 explicitly. For the explicitation, there were 17 obligatory explicitations, 3 optional explicitations, and 2 translation-inherent explicitations done by the translator. From the data analysis, it could be concluded that whether to let the utterances remain implicit or to make them explicit, the actions done by the translator were to make the translation comprehensible and sound natural to the target reader. The writer hopes there will be more study conducted in this field that the discussion is from another aspects or with different form of subject, and also tries to analyze all the kinds of implicit meaning, not just one, to have a broader analysis.
