Abstract
Alih kode merupakan fenomena yang sering dijumpai pada proses pengajaran Bahasa Inggris. Oleh karena itu, penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui frekuensi dari alih kode yang dilakukan oleh guru Bahasa Inggris selama proses belajar mengajar, alasan menggunakan alih kode, dan peranan alih kode dalam membantu siswa belajar Bahasa Inggris di SMP Negeri 7 Malang. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode deskriprif kualitatif. Participan dari penelitian ini adalah guru Bahasa Inggris and siswa dari kelas VIII H. Instrumen yang digunakan dalam mengumpulkan data antara lain panduan wawancara, kuisioner, handy-cam dan telepon seluler. Pengumpulan data dimulai pada tanggal 16 April 2015 sampai 12 Maret 2015. Tanggal tersebut meliputi observasi selama proses belajar mengajar dikelas, mendistribusikan kuisioner kepada siswa, dan melakukan wawancara dengan guru Bahasa Inggris beserta siswa. Hasil dari penelitian menunjukkan bahwa rata-rata frekuensi dari alih kode yang dilakukan oleh guru Bahasa Inggris selama proses belajar mengajar dalam tiga kali pertemuan adalah sebanyak 115 kali atau 47.91%. Selain itu, terdapat 403 ungkapan yang mengandung alasan penggunaan alih kode, yaitu talking about particular topic (1.24%), being emphatic about something (0.99%), interjection (26.30%), repetition used for clarification (34.00%), expressing group identity (0.25%), dan intention of clarifying the speech content for the interlocutor (37.22%). Disamping itu, hasil dari penelitian ini juga mengindikasikan bahwa sebagian besar siswa setuju bahwa alih kode membantu mereka dalam memahami materi secara lebih mudah (78.26%), membantu mereka dalam memahami kata-kata, konsep dan istilah yang sulit (100%), menghafal materi (82.61%), membuat mereka merasa nyaman belajar Bahasa Inggris didalam kelas (82.61%), membuat mereka berani untuk bertanya (65.22%), dan memotivasi mereka dalam belajar Bahasa Inggris (73.91%). Dengan melihat hasil tersebut, para guru sebaiknya dapat menggunakan alih kode sebagai pilihan strategi untuk membantu siswa dalam memahami materi dan instruksi yang diberikan. Selain itu, alih kode merupakan fenoma yang sering dijumpai di dunia pendidikan, oleh karena itu diharapkan bagi peneliti berikutnya untuk melakukan penelitian tentang alih kode pada aspek lain dalam dunia pendidikan.
English Abstract
Code switching is the phenomenon that is often found in English language teaching. Hence, this study is intended to find out the frequency of code switching used by English teacher during teaching and learning process, the reasons of employing code switching, and the role of teacher’s code switching in assisting students in learning English at SMP Negeri 7 Malang. This study used descriptive qualitative as the research design. The participants of the study were the English teacher and the students of VIII H class. There were some instruments to collect the data, they were interview guide, questionnaire, handy-cam, and cell-phone. The data were collected from April 16th, 2015 until May 12th, 2015, including observation during teaching and learning process in the classroom, distributing questionnaire to the students, and interviewing both teacher and students. The result shows that the average frequency of code switching employed by the teacher during teaching and learning process in three meetings were 115 times or about 47.91%. Besides, there were 403 utterances which contained the reasons of code switching. From those findings, the utterances were analyzed became six reasons, namely talking about particular topic (1.24%), being emphatic about something (0.99%), interjection (26.30%), repetition used for clarification (34.00%), expressing group identity (0.25%), and intention of clarifying the speech content for the interlocutor (37.22%). The result of this study also indicated that most of the students agreed that code switching assisted them in understanding the material easier (78.26%), understanding difficult words, concepts, and terms (100%), memorizing the material (82.61%), making them feel comfortable in learning English in the classroom (82.61%), making them confident to ask question (65.22%), and motivate them in learning English (73.91%). Therefore, code switching can be the alternative strategy to teach English. The teachers can use code switching as a strategy to help students in order to understand the material and the instruction given. Code switching also becomes a common phenomenon that arises in education. Thus, for the further researchers, it is suggested to conduct the study about code switching in another aspect of education.
