Prasetia, Kidung (2015) Ideological Construction Behind Candidates Representation On 2014 Presidential Campaign As Reflected In Tempo Online Magazine. Sarjana thesis, Universitas Brawijaya.
Abstract
English Abstract
broadcasting such events, media tends to look at an occasion from in certain point of view that brings out what is called as bias reporting in their news stories. Moreover, media often use euphemistic expresions to decrease the sense of offensiveness in concealing their ideology. The writer conducted a study about ideological construction behind candidates representation in 2014 presidential campaign in this thesis to : (1) investigate the type of euphemism used in candidates representation, (2) investigate how the candidates are represented, and (3) investigate the ideological construction behind the candidates representation. The theories of this research are from Fairclough (1992) and Warren (1992). The writer used qualitative research method due to the findings and all of the data of the findings presented and discussed descriptively. This study revealed that there were euphemistic expressions used to disguise ideology in candidates representation which can be classified into compounding, particularisation, implication, understatement, metaphore, and hyperbole euphemism. It also found that the language used in representing the candidates of the election is highly biased and ideological invested. The writer concludes that euphemism got effective discoursal capability to imply ideologie(s) within it, and biased language in news media can result in legitimation of one side and suppresion of the other side. The writer hopes that this study can be inspirational for the next reseachers who are willing to conduct the same study. The writer also hopes that the next researcher will conduct the study of Critical Discourse Analysis using another approach aside from Fairclough.
