Code Switching Used By English Teacher of SMPN 6 Malang,

Arintasari, Nila (2015) Code Switching Used By English Teacher of SMPN 6 Malang,. Sarjana thesis, Universitas Brawijaya.

Abstract

English Abstract

Bilingual people switch their language from one language to another language to communicate with others. Code switching also occur in English class in Indonesia. This study observed code switching used by the English teacher of SMPN 6 Malang. The problem of this study is to identify the types of code switching and also the function of the teacher in using code switching during the teaching and learning process. This study uses the theory which is proporsed by Hoffmann, Wardaugh, Appel and Muysken and also Gumperz. This study used descriptive qualitative as the research design. The subject of this study was the English teacher of 8.6 class. There were some instruments to collect the data, such as interview guide, digital camera and cell-phone. Data collection was done by recording the teacher utterances during teaching and learning process, transcribing the teacher utterances, identifying and marking the utterances that consist of code switching and also interviewing the teacher. The researcher collected 233 data that contain code switching. The result shows that the most code switching utterances that are used by the teacher are classified into intra-sentential. This type occurs 66 times (56,89%). Second, inter-sentential occurs 32 times (27,58%). Third, making emblematic switching occurs only 6 times (5,17%). Fourth, establishing continuity with the previous speaker that occurs 10 times (8,62%) and fifth involving a change of pronounciation that occur two times (1,72 %). Meanwhile, the function of code switching that mostly occurs is reiteration function which occurs 89 times (76,06 %). Next, directive function occurs 11 times (9,40%). Different with two types above, metalinguistic function occurs only 6 times (5,12 %), interjection occurs 3 times (2,56%), expressive function which occurs only once (0,85%) and the last function is affective function occurs 7 times (5,98%). The researcher conclude that code switching can be used by the teacher and to teach English so that the material can understood well by the students. The researcher give suggestion for the further researcher to develop the analyzing of code switching in the other field especially in education field since code switching becomes common phenomenon which can occured in education.
