Abstract

Madurese language is on of various languages in Indonesia which is spoken by Madurese people or the people who live in Madura area in East Java such as Surabaya, Probolinggo, Pasuruan, Jember, Banyuwangi and etc. The Madurese speech levels are divided into three Bhasa Enjhag- Iya, Bhasa Enggih- Bunten, Bhasa Enggih- Enten. There are some rules which are considered to be polite in Madurese communication, included the use of address terms. The writer conducts a research about the terms of address used by Madurese traders in Genteng market Surabaya, by using Kridalaksana’s and Wibowo’stheory. This research focuses on two problems: (1) What Madurese terms of address used by Madurese community in Genteng market Surabaya (2) What are the factors that affecting the use of address terms This research uses qualitative approach to describe the address terms phenomenon and answer the problem of the study. The data of this research are transcription of direct interview and the daily conversation used by male and female Madurese community. Furthermore, the type of this research is a case study because the writer considers in making the deep investigation about the term of address used by Madurese community in Genteng market Surabaya. This research reveals that there are thirty five terms of address which are divided into four kinds; twenty one terms in kinship categories such as Ramah and Ebhu, Three terms categories second personal pronoun such as Nang Delem, Panjhenengan, and Be’na, Five terms categories in title and rank such as Kyaih and Nyaih, and seven terms categories in others such as Abhing and Be’den Kaula.In addition the use of address terms influenced by several factors such as age, kin/blood relation, title and rank, close relationship, and social status. The writer hopes that this research can contribute a better and deeper understanding especially the address terms in Madurese traders. He suggest for the next researchers who want to conduct a similar research in sociolinguistic, especially the address termsphenomenon to use another theory to make their research more different and find the unique to address terms in different areas or cases.
