Abstract
Di era global, Bahasa Inggris memiliki peranan yang penting sebagai alat komunikasi dalam berbagai sektor kehidupan, seperti perdagangan, hubungan bilateral, politik, ilmiah, teknologi, dan masih banyak lagi. Di Indonesia, Bahasa Inggris menjadi Bahasa asing utama dan menjadi mata pelajaran wajib mulai dari jenjang sekolah menengah pertama hingga universitas. Salah satu komponen bahasa yang sangat penting dalam menunjang keberhasilan siswa dalam mengusai Bahasa Inggris adalah kosa kata. Namun, permasalahan dalam mengusai kosa kata masih ada disekolah seperti dalam menghafal kata-kata, dan mengatasi kebosanan siswa. Hasil dari preliminary Study yang telah dilakukan peneliti membuktikan bahwa siswa 7A SMP Wahid Hasyim Malang mengalami kesulitan dalam menguasai kosa kata. Berdasarkan permasalahan diatas, peneliti mengusulkan teknik bernama Contemporary Music Approach (CMA) guna meningkatkan kemampuan kosa kata siswa. CMA memiliki ragam aktifitas yang menyenangkan dan dapat membantu siswa mengingat kosa kata baru. Rumusan masalah dari penelitian ini adalah “Bagaimana CMA dapat meningkatkan kemampuan dalam menguasai kosa kata”. Dengan menggunakan Penelitian Tindakan Kelas sebagai desain penelitian, peneliti mengaplikasikan CMA untuk mengatasi masalah siswa dalam belajar kosa kata. Penelitian ini berfokus pada peningkatan kemampuan siswa. Peneliti menggunakan tes, wawancara, checklist observasi, catatan lapang sebagai instrumen. Penelitian ini memiliki dua kriteria pencapaian, yaitu rata-rata post-test siswa meningkat 5 poin dari rata-rata nilai pre-test dan 70% siswa dapat mencapai KKM. Dapat disimpulkan bahwa hasil penelitian ini menunjukan adanya peningkatan yang segnifikan setelah pengaplikasian CMA. Dari dua kriteria kesuksesan, terbukti bahwa kriteria pertama tercapai karena rata-rata nilai post-test siswa meningkat 22 poin dari rata-rata nilai siswa pada pre-test, dari 57,06 menjadi 79,22. Kriteria kedua juga dapat dicapai dengan 74,19% siswa mencapai KKM. Dengan demikian, CMA dapat digunakan sebagai teknik alternatif untuk mengajar kosa kata. Selain itu, penelitian ini dilakukan dalam satu siklus yang terdiri dari 3 pertemuan karena kriteria kesuksesan sudah tercapai dalam satu siklus. Peneliti menyarankan kepada peneliti lainnya yang tertarik untuk melakukan penelitian yang serupa, agar mengadakan lebih dari satu siklus. Hal ini bertujuan agara hasil yang dicapai lebih maksimal, karena memiliki lebih banyak waktu untuk penerapan CMA di kelas.
English Abstract
In the global era, English takes an important role as a means of communication in many sectors of life, such as trading, bilateral relationship, politic, science, technology, and many others. Therefore, English becomes the first foreign language and one of the compulsory subjects that is taught in Indonesia from junior high school up to universities. One of the language components that supports students in mastering English is vocabulary. Nevertheless, problems in teaching and learning vocabulary still exist at schools, such as in memorizing the words and avoiding students’ boredom. Based on the preliminary study that has been conducted by the researcher, it is confirmed that students in 7th grade A of SMP Wahid Hasyim Malang found difficulties in mastering vocabulary. Concerning with those phenomena, the researcher proposes a teaching technique named Contemporary Music Approach to improve students’ vocabulary mastery. This study aims at investigating how Contemporary Music Approach could improve students’ ability in mastering vocabulary of 7th grade A students of SMP Wahid Hasyim Malang. By using Classroom Action Research, it is expected that this study may solve students’ vocabulary problems. As this research focuses on the students’ improvement, the researcher used test, interview guide, observation checklist and field note as the instruments. The researcher set two criteria of success, which are students’ mean score on post-test should gain more than 5 points from the mean score of pre-test, and there are more than 70% of the students are able to pass minimum standard score of English that is 75. In conclusion, from the two criteria of success that had been set, it is established that the first criterion is accomplished since the students mean score of post-test is 22 points higher than the mean score of students’ pre-test, from 57.06 on pre-test to 79.22 on post-test. The second criterion has also successfully been attained, since the students that could pass minimal standard score of English is 74.19 %. Thus, the CMA can be used as an alternative technique for teaching vocabulary which can improve and keep their vocabulary. Meanwhile, this research was conducted in one cycle that consisted of three meetings since the criteria of success were already reached in one cycle. Since there are still weaknesses found in this research such as the time limitation and there are still some students who could not pass the KKM, the researcher suggests to future researchers who are interested to conduct the similar research to have more than one cycle. It is because, an ongoing implementation of CMA and more time are very recommended to overcome the problems faced by those students and for maximal result.
